fibromyalgia

Other than the rehashed treatment of antidepressants and pain pills, has anyone heard of any really reliable alternatives other than glucosamine which is a great help by the way though not a cure.

Have you ever looked into the possibility of a link between sleep quality and fibromyalgia? From what I have read (it has been suggested to my father that some of his aches&pains symptoms could be this) I think there may be a strong connection along the lines that abnormal sleep pattens throughout the night may disrupt the body's restorative efforts for muscles, tendons and ligaments. I don't know what the latest research has been however.

I've also heard of this link. While this may seem very simplistic, a friend of mine has tried herbals such as Melatonin and Valerian for better sleep. She also gets a full body massage weekly. With this combination she's had a significant reduction in her symptoms. Also, see the thread on this board re. 5HTP and L-Trytophan.

I've read a book called "Betrayal by the Brain" by Jay A. Goldstein, MD, who has a theory about fibromyalgia being caused by dysfunction in the processing of stimuli by the brain. He has about 30 different meds he tries, which he reports helping patients (he uses a med trial protocol to determine what helps each patient, since the science isn't yet up to determining on the basis of symptoms what will help a particular person). I am going to see him soon, and will report on my results (success, I hope!) here.

Hi Don, I have fibromyalgia. Have you heard of treating it with guaifenisin? I started using guai syrup..straight from the drug store. All it is is a decongestant..just get regular robitussin. Now my doctor prescribes a pill of guai for me. Just research it first..there's lots of info out there on it and it being very effective for fibromyalgia...all my tender points are gone..it's wonderful. Dr. StArmand is the founder of this treatment.
