Hi, gang -- I discovered your discussions through a
search engine, and decided to join in. I am currently
on Effexor, my fourth med. I've got great news and
terrible news. The great news is that I've never been
so depression and anxiety free. I have not had one
nightmare nor woken up with anxiety in weeks. I'm
assuming that the fact it's time-released is a big
factor. The bad news is that all of my side effects
seem to be even worse: dryness, foot jerks, drowsiness,
sexual disinterest, etc. I'm not sure it's worth it!I also saw the Newsweek article on SAMe, and it boosted
my hopes for an alternative. But I was very disenchanted
to see your comments on price. I had never heard of 5HTP
before, and will ask my doctor about both (she's up on
everything). Any other suggestions? (I've taken Prozac,
Wellbutrin, and Luvox. Effexor works the best so far
for my moods.)P.S. I just did a little more research on both SAMe and
5HTP, and learned that they've both been known to have
problems with intestinal gas. That's a red flag for me,
as I have a history of digestive sensitivities. Bummer!

Hey Jan,
I did not know that SAMe caused intestinal gas, and I am here to tell you that I was sooooo miserable when I tried it. I mean, I took a half a bottle of rolaids, maalox, and Gas-X and nothing moved it. I looked as if I was 5 months pregnant. I was under the impression that there weren't any side effects from the stuff, and I was one of the odd balls. Oh well, I'm glad that you posted that little bit of info.> Hi, gang -- I discovered your discussions through a

Thanks for the info, Sherry. I was afraid of that...Anyone else found the same results with 5HTP? Anyone discovered a resolution for this particular problem?

We use it for horses, especially when we're stabling around sandy areas, and I swear by it. I take it myself, and can tell you that it helps with intestinal gas, constipation, and general "not feeling well in the innards" sorts of feelings. There are a ton of different products that contain it, including Metamucil, and it fixes all sorts of colics. (Honestly, we use it for horses prone to sand colic, gas colic, and just-plain-colic.) It also has been shown in some tests to lower serum cholesterol. Probably just because it empties everything out, but even if it doesn't fix your arteries, it will help with the bloating.
This is the end of the thread.
