Becoming tolerant to Dexedrine

Posted by Janice on September 18, 1999, at 20:11:17

Hi everyone, This drug has been wonderful for my ADD but I can feel myself becoming tolerant to it. For the first time in my life i have been able to make grocery lists, go grocery shopping, organize, clean and make meals. And this is great for my eating disorder, which when I do eat well is great for my depression and so on and so. Just being able to do these 'boring things' that i have struggled with my whole life has been great for my self esteem and consequently my depression. So I am very nervous about this tolerance I can feel building. I'm only taking 15mg a day but I'm worried that my tolerance level will keep building and building until Dexedrine does nothing for me anymore. Is this possible? Being extremely sensitive to a medication initially, and then quickly building a tolerance for it has been my typical reaction to many medications. Does anyone know of any other ways to help with ADD (anti-depressants don't seem to work for me... well not yet anyway)? Thanks in advance for your responses. Janice

Exercise helps me clear my head and apparently there's evidence of nerve regenrating factors being released during exercise. Iwas told this by a pharmacist friend I know I'll try to get a concrete reference for you. I'd expect you will build up some tolerance its similar to ritalin and hence amphetamine like in nature. It was all the vogue in the 50s for weight loss, also amphetamines were once used in aerosols for asthma until abuse became a problem. I suppose we all use some stimulants ie.caffeine and then theres all the herbal tonics. Keep on exploring but exercise must be one of the best substitutes

You're not becoming "tolerant," dear ... you're becoming ADDICTED.

You can gradually increase the dose to 60mgs a day, but, I fear, the sound
of grass growing at night might keep you awake.

You could try other stimulants such as Biphetamine or Desoxyn, but
it all comes down to the same thing; i.e., the need for greater amounts
to get the job done.

Next you'll be scoring methamphetamine on the street and shooting up ...
and your epitaph could read "SPEED KILLS"!

Take a drug holiday (don't use anything for a couple of days), to "reset"
your body to the standard 15mgs/day.

thanks Ian and Anon...

Hi, Ian I jog 3 times a week for an hour and a half. I love it! I have the hyperactivity type of ADD. I also do yoga daily to help calm myself down. Do other types of exercise like weight lifting help, or is it mostly aerobic types that help? I've been noticing lately that ensuring I get enough sleep each night really seems to help. Janice.

Anon, I've been addicted before to substances alot worse than this one, and that's what I'm trying to stay away from again. An addiction to Dexedrine and a decent, calm productive life would be a great deal. I'm just not sure if even that is going to work. I'm going to talk to my doctor about just taking it when I need it, or should i say desperately need it. Janice. you won't be seeing me on the streets, but thanks for your concern.

There is no medical evidence to suggest that ADD patients
are becomming addicted to their stimulants.

Your dose is very low. You don't say how long you've been
using it but it's not uncommon to need a dose increase
after the first couple a months.

This is pure hype and is not helpful to anyone.
Talk to your doctor. You're problem is typical with ADD
and I'm sure a solution can be found.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is the STUPIDEST thing I've ever heard!
Read your PDR, Sonny, and the little box the prefaces the Dexedrine abstract!

I did talk to my doctor and he told me to avoid MORONS like you, but I'm
not taking his advice.

Any addiction is dangerous, as I can see by the monkey on your back.
Good grief!

thanks for your help RS ...

Anon, are you some kind of puritan? What should I do; drink 20 cups of strong coffee a day and still feel like crap, or some dexedrine and feel good for the first time in my entire life. I've been at this a long time (getting better) and Dexedrine has been the only thing that has given me complete relief. I'm not even sure why I am bothering to type this note to you. I guess I do believe you are trying to help, so thank you for this. Good luck on your journey. Janice

James here....

Why not save to worry till tolerance happens, if it ever does. Most ADD'ers don't become tolerant,
I never have and am on the same dose with the same effects for 5 years. You're still on the low end of the usual dose (10-40 mgs) so don't worry.
It is not uncommon to have to play with the dose
a little to find the right dose. I take 35 mgs a day and I know an ADD'er who takes 100 mgs/ day and is stable at this dose for years and you would never know this person is on anything.

wait to worry?
