SJW "Movana" --- weird experience, opinions wanted

Posted by anita on December 5, 1999, at 14:19:28

Hi all,

I had been taking 900mg of SJW "Perika" for a month and a half, with no effect as far as I could tell. Then I switched to the Movana brand.

Around then, suddenly one day I started feeling like I had taken a little bit of Ritalin (without the irritability), tho I hadn't -- I stopped sleeping so much, I felt like doing things, and wasn't suicidal anymore -- all this in one day! And I still feel this way, mostly.

But I don't know why this happened -- Perika and Movana are supposed to have exactly the same ingredients (standardized hypericin & hyperforin) and are supposed to be reliable. I doubt the SJW just kicked in after a month and a half -- whenever I've gotten any improvement from an AD it's always been gradual.
I'm wondering if it's a bit of a manic switch, especially since I had been especially depressed and lethargic over the past two months, or if it's some effect of completely going off prescription ADs after having been on them for 5 years.

Anybody else have a drastic effect from the Movana brand? Anybody got any opinions on my situation?

thanks!
anita

It sounds like it's just kicked in. Sometimes it happens that way. Poof! And the time frame you've waited sounds about right for St Johnswort. What's interesting is that Perika and Movana are the exact same thing. Not just similar formulas, but literally the exact same thing. Ever noticed they even taste the same just before swallowing? The same distinct shape? Same color? Nature's Way Perika is simply Movana distributed and marketed by a different company. More sales for Movana. They don't mind. Regardless, if you're feeling better, that's very good news. If your mind thinks Movana is better, so be it. Bring on the Movana! :)

Hey Anita! Good to hear from you, especially with good news!

Well, Movana being remarketed as Perika puts the dampers on my theory. Often, particularly in the supplements market, the "exact same thing" isn't always the exact same thing. Preparation of compounds, even sources for them, can make a big difference in the efficacy of the supplement. For example-1, NADH is an extremely fragile compound that is difficult to extract and difficult to get intact to your intestines for absorption. More and more companies will be claiming their stuff is as good as Enada, a patented version of the stuff, but lab analyses as to the "purity" and concentration of the stuff in the pill don't mean it'll be around for absorption in the end, figuratively and literally. For example-2, the big flap about garlic. Can't remember exactly the story, but I seem to recall that the only thing in garlic that is effective for coronary health is destroyed by heat -- so the remove-that-garlic-stink process renders it useless. For example-last, there's the case of SuperOxide Dismutase (SOD), another super-anti-oxidant like NADH. Most SOD is produced, I understand, as a by-product of getting insulin from pigs. Upjohn-Pharmacia's SOD product (Prozyme) is extracted from bee pollen, and is the only non-animal source of the stuff. They claim far greater effectiveness over similar doses of animal-based SOD.

... but all that's irrelevant for the Movana/Perika lack-of-distinction. I'm happy to hear it's working for you, Anita!

... and just in case it is a little bit of mania, my advice is to leave your credit cards at home. ;^)

Wow, you're sure Perika & Movana are _exactly_ the same? Cause the price difference is enormous -- $11 for 36 Movana pills, vs. $14 for 120 Perika pills!

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll keep downing the pills and hope my improvement continues :-)
