imipramine and rage

Posted by Thomas W on February 2, 2000, at 9:20:13

I've been taking imipramine since 11/11/99. Started
with 1 for 7 days, then 2, then 3. On the first refill
Dr. cut it back to 1 a day; same dose. Now I get
extremely angry easily and alost enraged over things
that are of little consequence. Sometimes the rage
get's to physical trembing and hyperventalation.

Could the reduction in drug cause this? I'm going nutty
over this...thx

James here....

Are you on at least 75 mgs ? This is the smallest
dose that will produce true AD effect.

James, No. That is what is so weird. When I was
reduced to one a day it was at the 25mg strength.
I called my Dr. today but he is not in untill tomorrow.
His nurse said she would try to do a conference call
and I hope she does. I don't get anything out of
25mg a day. Beats me. THANK YOU for responding.

Did he discuss the reduced dosage with you? If not, is it possibly a mistake?

BTW, I always read over the scrips before leaving the doc's office, cuz a few times, he miswrote them and it was inconvenient and annoying to clear it all up.

Are you taking imipramine for depression or anxiety? I take a low dose (25-50mg of doxepin (another tri-cyclic) for anxiety. See the "Qx" link here at Dr. Bob's site, click on "index" and look at the article "Very low dose tricyclic therapy". Sounds like you need to increase the dosage to me, though.

Best wishes.

Thomas,
As I mentioned in my post to you above, a sudden drop from 75 to 25mg a day of imipramine is very unusual, especially at the beginning of treatment. It is hardly surprising that you haven't been feeling great lately--please do speak with your doctor (or any doctor) ASAP to get this sorted out. Unless he was concerned that you were having some kind of negative reaction, it could very likely be a mistake.
best,
jd

For the rage issue, have you considered adding lithium or inderal - both are documented to work well for rage/aggression. Best wishes and blessings,
