Serzone side effects

Posted by Sherry on March 23, 2000, at 14:46:49

As some of you already know from previous posts, I started taking Serzone 2 weeks ago, and I'm up to 200 mg now. My questions for those of you who have taken it are, did it totally blur your vision, and if so did it go away? How long did it take the drowsiness to go away? and Did you have more difficulty concentrating, and does that go away? I'm am glad to say that the initial anxiety went away. However, it was replaced with drowsiness. Can live with that. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to respond.~Sherry

Sherry,
The only problem I had with Serzone after 6 weeks or so was hostility. I didn't even notice it myself but co-workers pointed it out. I hope it's a great drug for you but be aware that this can happen to some. If not for that, I would probably still be on it. Good luck.

Sherry, the only problem I had with Serzone is that it didn't decrease OCD. I felt the hostility and dizziness others have complained of, during the first two weeks, and the fatigue, but by week three, I just felt great. I had some occasional visual oddities (initial blurring of vision when I woke up in the middle of the night) but again, this was minimal.--Cindy W

Thanks Cindy,
You have been a rock for me during my initial adjustment of this drug. I am very sensitive to side effects. Adjusting really sucks, and it always throws me into a panic. I can deal with everything, but the inability to concentrate. It may not be the med for me, but I'm not going to give up just yet. I am not hostile in the least. In fact, just the opposite, and I have a libido for the first time in a very long time. That's good! Especially for my husband. Thanks again for the response. ~Sherry

I believe I replied to your previous inquiries, and stated that Serzone had few side-effects and was rolling along in a smooth manner for me. Funny enough, as much as I hadn't noticed, but my family surely did, I have begun to get very hostile. Sound familiar Phil?

Just passed the six-week mark on the higher dosage, and am definitely angry, sarcastic, and way not friendly, and I don't seem to care how I'm "coming off" to others. I know I should care. I know I normally care if I hurt someone's feelings, or am brash, yet right now, I really don't care. It's similar to hypomania, or my mixed mania, but not the same spirit, it's hard for me to put into words. I'm not filled with activity, or energy, or ideas, just an ungarnished view of reality, which kinda sucks.

After 4 or 5 weeks at 600mg/day I don't think I've
crossed into the rage zone. Today at group, though,
there was a new member and we were going around
reiterating, for the new member's benefit, our
stories. I've told my story sooo many times in
group (not the entire story but quite a bit) that
I was giving the abridged one today. The new
member interrupted me constantly ("Oh, I know what
that is like. My last pdoc told me I was...").
The last interruption was when when she asked if I
had a personal relationship with God. That was it.
I looked at her, told her my faith or spirituality
was my own business, that in fact I thought it was
crap, and to be quiet so I could finish.

I wasn't alone in my feelings toward this new member.

Anyway, I think that's the only abrasive thing I've said.

Uh Oh, forgot, I told my therapist I was pissed at
her, but she deserved it. I was sick on Monday.
I called her and said I would not be in because I was
ill. She asked what was wrong. I told her I had been
up half the night coughing. She responded in a
patronizing, demeaning tone "Did you smoke too much
pot last night?" I like pot, therapuetically, but
I have not smoked any in several years. Anyway, I
went to my family doc & was diagnosed with bronchitis.

Saw my pdoc today. Am switching meds. The Serzone
isn't effective for my depression and is still
causing vertigo, I can't handle that. So I begin a
Serzone taper and begin 75mg Effexor tomorrow.

Harry, I'd start the Effexor-XR slower if I were you...I took 37.5 for a week, then 75 mg/day for a week, etc. etc., having also gone from Serzone (not as high a dose as you though). Hope Effexor-XR helps (it's working for me).

Thanks, Cindy, but I'll follow the doc's plan for
now. Have got to say that I feel completely drugged
this afternoon after my first dose of Effexor.
Appreciate your concern, and glad that the Effexor
is helping you.
