Sensitivity to light…

Posted by Janice on April 4, 2000, at 17:41:39

Hello all,

Last week I stayed in my brother's loft. I slept right beside a southern exposure wall made of glass. This really pleased me, as I have SAD. Waking up, which is usually difficult, was simple and painless.

What I noticed was that while lying in bed beside all this natural lighting was that as the sun would come out, I'd start to feel like going jogging (doing this, doing that)… and when the sun would hide behind the clouds, I'd lose my desire for my ambitious undertakings.

•could my SAD be this sensitive?
•or was this psychological?

Thank you for your imput, Janice

Janice,
Sunshine or rain affecting a persons mood is a normal thing for a lot of people, even those who don't suffer from depression. When the sun is shining I always feel a little better (today is 80 degrees and sunny and I feel real good)and more ambitious, but when it rains I feel down and am completely content to sit in my recliner and do nothing. I think its a psychological thing for me.

Hope this helps,
Greg

Thanks for your response Greg,

do you have SAD too? Although you may not know if you live somewhere where it is 80° in April.

Hi Janice! Thanks for the tip about hypo-Add, remember? I investigated it further and it turns out that is my problem and not dysthymia. I started Ritalin today and I am sooo hopeful! I hope I am not disappointed again. I am as sensitive to light as you are. Even here where the sun shines 95% of the year. I can feel my mood descend even if a black cloud passes overhead. Iam very sensitive to noise too, especially traffic. Once more THANKS love Jan

Janet, that's great!

Janet,

I hope the best for you with Ritalin. I am always surprised more people don't know about the hypo-active ADD. I believe it must be a new category of illness. I bet many people with chronic treatment resistant depression could have this…and doctors are so hesitant in prescribing Ritalin.

Please let us know how you are doing. I will be very curious.

I read a book about this disorder…let me know if you would like me to find the book. From what I remember from the book, a low grade chronic depression often accompanies this ADD.

Glad to know my babbling helped you help yourself, Janice.

Janet, I've had exactly the same experience with finding out that there even *is* such a thing as Hypo-active ADD. I wanted to tell you, if the Ritalin doesn't work out, don't get discouraged. There are quite a few other stimulants to try. I could not handle Ritalin(actually started to abuse it), but am doing quite well with Adderall. I hope you'll let us know how it goes. Good luck! Thanks! The trouble is it seems that you can only get Ritalin here in Brazil. I think it is because the stimulants were so abused by "endocrinologists" for diets that the govt. has clamped down totally on their prescription. I hope the Ritalin works and I must be careful not to abuse it, Thanks for the warning! Best wishes Jan
