help

Posted by elise on April 7, 2000, at 10:04:46

I am on prozac and neurontin. I have been on prozac for years and the doc suggested i go on neurontin for anxiety (after buspar made me very irritable). I was taking 40 mg. prozac and 900 mg. /day neurontin. It worked great for a while- i never realized that what i was feeling was anxiety! It stopped working and i increased to 1800 mg./ day. I started to hallucinate. SO back to 40 mg. and 900. Depressed and doc says increase prozac to 60mg. I do and i get manic. Back to 40 and 900. go to a new doc who suggests i may be add ---I don't know about this. I feel like i have add sinc e i started taking neurontin. So i take adderall and i hate it. I am speeding and feeling more introverted then ever. In the meantime, we cut back to 30 prozac and 450 neurontin a day. Today this is where i am --no adderall and i feel much better without adderall. My doc won't be back in town until monday. I just don't know...sorry to ramble. is there anyoone out there that has any suggestions? Thanks, elise

Elise,

You really don't say why your doctor wanted to try Neurontin. It is a mood stabilzer and is often used in conjunction with an anti-depressant. There are many meds to deal with anxiety problems suchas the benzo's (Ativan, Klonopin, Xananx.) They can work in cooperation with depression meds..

You need to talk to your doctor openly about how you feel in your head. We (as mental health patients) tend to hide things out of fear. For the most part our doctors are very capable of dealing with the troubles we bring up.

Please don't get hung up on the dosages that you have tried as much as what may hav helped you in your recovery.

Eventually, we can find what helps us best. Two years ago I tried to kill myself twice in three months. It was the lowest point in my life.. Today I am as close to a normal person that I have been in 20 years. I do take 5 prescription meds evr day and I am thankful for waht they do for me. I'm not concerned about the dosage or the number because I know that I am ab le to walk the streets as a 'normal" person.

The proper meds and dosage can give you an awful lot of good if you just give them a chance.

Chris
