Sex drive and antiandrogens : please help !

Posted by John on April 13, 2000, at 9:59:38

I'm living since the age of eight with the urge of masturbating. I do it every day, sometimes several times a day and can't stay off of it. When I walk in the streets I have sexual fantasies with the women I see and sometimes even erections.
I've even had suffered from depression and panic. First my doc put me on Prozac : I had a great relief from depression and anxiety, but not from compulsive sexuality. So I tried Paxil, hoping that my craving for sex diminished. But it did not. So, while staying on Paxil for depression my doc prescribed to me an antiandrogen+estrogen medication called Diane. After reading the adverse effects I was so afraid that I did not begin the therapy. I'd like to comunicate with someone who's had my same problem and found a solution for it.

Thank you all.

John, I don't know much about sexual obsessions, but have read that they respond to SSRI's. Ask your pdoc about possibly trying another SSRI, since many decrease desire and libido (which may put you back into the 'normal range,' whatever that is! I don't think having fantasies and masturbating daily or several times per day is necessarily a problem, unless it really bothers you or you do it publicly or something. During adolescence, I think it is the norm, for males. Best wishes!

Many people live with this problem. They deal with it. I can't. I feel like a slave. The real problem is about how you live with it.
I tried almost all ssri. Luvox was great for my problem, but I had to quit because of nausa and vomiting. So I tried Prozac first, then Zoloft and now Paxil. I just miss Celexa, but guess there won't be much diferences.
I know that the med that my doc gave me could solve my problem, but to a very high cost, such as gynecomastia (in many cases it requires surgical treatment).
Anyway, please if someone can help me I would really appreciate it.

Thank you

John

Epilepsy? Family?

Brain injury?

Depression or schizophrenia? Family?

Eat too much?

Sleep too much?

What are the active ingredients of the antiandrogen you have been prescribed?

Have you ever been on an anticonvulsant?

Thanks Scott for replying. I don't have a family history of epilepsy or schizophrenia and don't suffer from any of them. Just my grandmother suffered from depression and panic.
Yes, I tend to eat too much, especially junk food and sweet foods, and also tend to sleep too much (these symptoms looks like the one of atypical depression).
The active ingredeints that my doc prescribed me were ciproterone and ethilestardiol.
Do you think I may bnefit from a therpay with an anticonvulsant ? Which one you think ?
Waiting for your answer.

Thank you

John
