I'm seeing one of these semi-extinct life forms tomorrow. I thought the methods of the chain-smoking Fritz Perls had been absorbed into NLP and that had turned out to be bogus. Anybody anything encouraging to say?

Fred, I'm sorry I don't have any experience in Gestalt therapy to share, but I would really like to know how your appointment goes. I've always wondered exactly what is involved in Gestalt. I knew someone in the late 80's who was supposed to do it and chickened out, but she never explained what she would have had to do, so I'm curious what the process is. If you don't mind, and have time, I would be grateful for anything you can tell me. Thanks, CarolAnn

CarolAnn thanks for responding. Just seen her again. Gestalt means the complete picture. Delve into the past, but stay in the present. Speak the feelings of the child within but don't intellectualise (where's the complete picture gone?). It's very much not CBT but not psychoanalysis either. Don't know what it is. Perhaps a bit aimless at present but we'll see.

Gestalt Lives! I didn't think that therapy still existed. I went through a Gestalt group in 1984. It was weird but great. I went for a few months and only spoke once but I learned so much from the others. I have such a clear memory of the group members, hard to beleive it was 16 years ago.

I thought these had all died a natural death, but a web search proves otherwise. My word yes. Full of vague claims but no mention of anything specific being cured. Janov is still trying to stop other people doing Primal Therapy. Rebirthers are still releasing "toxins" and replacing them with oxygen poisoning.
