New to Anxiety and Related Drugs

Posted by DanC on April 28, 2000, at 18:03:45

Hi,
I recently went to see my doctor about chest pains, dizziness, and genrally feeling lousy. I had gone to the emergency room during the previous week due to the chest pains, but was told that nothing was wrong with my heart.

The first doctor i saw diagnosed me with anxiety and gave me avitan, which really calmed me down and helped me sleep, but i am worried about the addictive nature of this drug. The next doctor i saw (my primary care physician and a cardiologist) agreed with the diagnosis and gave me celexa. i took the celexa for three days, but i hate the side affects (insomnia, incresed anxiety, etc). i did not take the celexa today (with my doctors blessing) but had a small anxiety episode this afternoon (withdrawl maybe??). I took an avitan to calm me down, but like i said, i don't want to get addicted to this drug. That is where i stand now. i have never taken anything for anxiety or depression, nor been aware that these disorders may exist in me.

If this story sounds familiar to any of the folks on this board, i would love to hear how things have turned out. i am a little anxious (ironic, isn't it) about what may be "wrong" with me, so any feedback would be appreciated. I am a 30 year old male, if this helps.

Thank you for your help,
Dan

Your story is my story. I can say that it is a temporary medical problem, not a spiritual one and furthermore it gets worked out one day at a time. I'm going into my third week right now and my doctor says I am way ahead of the curve. You need God and the support of great people. :). Check out #anxiety/depression on dalnet IRC if you need to chat at weird hours ;). Peace and God bless you. It is a tough problem but with the right help (and it sounds like you're getting it), you will do fine. I'm also off the Ativan and on Celexa now. Check out http://www.apa.org/pubinfo/panic.html for some info on where you're at and what you can do.
