Lack of Sex Drive

Posted by lady313 on June 11, 2000, at 21:59:50

I`m hoping that someone out there can help me. I`m 36 years old and married to a wonderful man whom I love very much. My problem is a total lack of desire for sex. He tries to please me but it only ends up aggravating me. Is there something that I can take to bring back the desire or am I just doomed to a boring life in the bedroom, not to mention a disappointed husband ?

Hi,
I have been on antidepressants that eliminated my sex drive, and sometimes when severely depressed and off meds my sex drive would wane a little at times. What, if any, meds are you on? How long has your sex drive been gone? Is your lack of sex drive caused by depression? If you can give more details, I think you'll get better feedback. Hope to hear more from you.

Yes, I am taking an antidepressant for anxiety. I currently am taking Zoloft but was on Prozac for about 10 years. I was switched to the Zoloft when I complained that I was tired all the time.
I know that antidepressants can have that effect but I was taking them in the beginning, when I first met my husband, and I didn`t have any problem with my sex drive then. I`ve always thought that it might be a hormonal imbalance because when I was pregnant (and my hormones were running high), the desire returned with a vengeance !

Lady - The hormonal imbalance theory sounds like a good place to start, esp. with the changes at pregnancy (not abnormal, though). Low estogen levels may play a part.

Zoloft can cause sexual dysfunction in many people. You have to look at a number of factors. How long after the start of the Zoloft did the decrease in desire begin? Had your Zoloft dose been raised within a month of the loss of your sexual desire? Is the Zoloft keeping you in remission from your depression? Are you peri-menopausal, in relation to your mom (eg are you about to or have you gone through menopause and at what age did your mother start menopause?

While Zoloft and Prozac are considered to be in the same family of antidepressants (SSRIs) their chemical structure (for the most part) is very different. This could mean that Prozac did not cause any sexual dysfunction, but something that Zoloft is binding to is. Zoloft, to a small extent, also blocks dopamine reuptake and sigma receptors, where Prozac doesn't. I don't know how this relates to sexual function, but it may.

See your doctor about the estrogen levels to rule that part out, anyway.

Hope this helps - Cam

If the problem is really getting you down,... try changing your meds to serzone... All AD's I tried removed all hint of sex drive, yet since I've been on serzone it's all returned with a vengence... Especially the ability to orgasm... And I seem to want "it" all the time!!! My poor hubby doesn't know whats hit him!!

Wellbutrin has libido enhancing effects for some people - when I took it by itself, I definitely noticed a difference. Good Luck.

A friend of mine recently started taking the supplement DHEA. It's a hormone. It is sold over the counter almost anywhere. Her Rheumatologist recommended it for arthritis aches, but she discovered it had an added benefit.
When she reported her increased sex drive, her doctor told her that was a common bonus.

Thank you, everyone for your great suggestions. Now, at least, I have some information to talk to the doctor about.
