I know I should do the research myself, but if anybody wants to answer this off the top of his/her head, I'd appreciate it. It's not a life-or-death question, just curiosity. My mother took lithium for almost 40 years. She began having severe memory problems 8 or 9 years ago, I think. All docs have ruled out Alzheimer's and other possible causes. I mentioned my mother's memory problems to a friend (long distance, we don't talk often) who is a neuropsychologist, and he rather casually said, "Yes, well long-term lithium use can have some pretty negative effects on the brain"
(This is a loose quote.)My question is, what's known about long-term lithium use and memory?

Sorry boBB, I've never read/heard anything about this. I believe lithium causes the most strain on the kidneys in longterm use. Janice

I asked this question down here so it wouldn't get confused with the other lithium thread. It is a serious question. It is an honest question.
The situation I describe is true. (I said it wasn't life-or-death because it is too late for my mother. She will never again be able to remember what she said 2 minutes ago.)
She's been to neurologists, many shrinks, etc. Not Alzheimer's, as I said before. Not a stroke.
I'm sorry your need to get a dig in prompted you to reply to my post. I thought you said you were getting better on impulse control. I wish you luck with that.

I do have a terrible impulse control disorder, and I forgot to take my Dexedrine on the day I posted to you. you are as clever as the person I mistake you for.
As I have a policy, which usually I find easy to follow, not to respond to certain postings (posters), I'll continue to practice it.
