Thanks for asking. NO! I'm not ready to go back to
work, & believe me I know the clock is ticking
(seems to be ticking faster & faster). I saw my
pdoc yesterday and her sage advice was to "just
do it." Wasn't there an advertisement with that
jingle in it? Seriously, I am very anxious about
returning. Forget anxious, I'm frightened of it.
I'm afraid of:
1) oversleeping & being late
2) missing days
3) stress, my ability to handle it, & my performance
4) the reactions of co-workers (being labeled a 'head case')
5) the entire corporate game, where middle management
personnel are the first to be sent to the firing
line & the most convenient to blameAh, I'm ranting. I'd rather be a skilled craftsman
and make violins or something.I'm down to 10mg Celexa now, should be 0 by the
end of the week. I just added Wellbutrin to my
med cocktail today. I had taken it several years
ago with some benefit. At least I'll be free of
the dreaded SSRI's & their side effects. How are you doing Judith? I forget where you live,
but we're back to rain & T-storms and lower temps
after a week or so of sunny warm weather here in

> Harry, re the skilled craftsman thing. You might really be on to something. Reading your post about going back to work nearly gave me palpitations. I hated 9-5 jobs, even when they were in creative fields, and decided my personality was really not suited to that environment. I'm not saying skilled craftsmen are all happy-go-lucky people (I'm married to one), and even a "successful" one may not make enough money for many of the finer things in life(like vacations), but I wonder if you're not giving yourself a worthwhile clue when you write that....Just a thought. I truly empathize with your going-back-to-work feelings, and send all my best wishes for a gentle re-entry.

> hbHave you ever rehearsed and dwelled upon a dialogue in your head about just how you will say this and that and such and such to someone only to then meet with that person or whomever and the dialogue is all for naught, because the situation or discussion worked out so well and so easily? Yet,the time and the conversation going around and around in your head has been so exhausting and draining as you prepare yourself for the worse case scenario.....sad to say that I continue to do this and I am old as dirt, harry!
It would appear that you dread so much returning to your "career" all because you are spinning these fears around and around in your mind. It may be that one or all are valued concerns OR that one or all may not be of any concern, because you have taken so much time up in your leisure fretting about them to the point of immobilizing yourself. Please,I don't mean to demean any of your fears for I have so many begetting babies in my own mind....I have generations living and thriving here!!! The long and the short of it all is that your doctor may be correct in that you need to "just do it". You can walk away from the job in time should you need to,but first go forth and accomplish then set some sort of goal for yourself to create and set in motion the freedom of doing your own creative, career thing.
My bet is upon you, harry b. You have that drive, that spark to "ignite" your life,'cause your words say this.....It's hot and humid here in coastal NC. Please do try to send some of that rain and cooler temps our way.
Later.........JudithC

Harry B:
I wish you good luck with going back to work. Is your job deadly? Feel like a 50-pound weight on you?
I was just invited to leave my last job and being home has made me realize how grateful I am not to have to go to it. It was a burden, no fun, no creativity, etc. and I would have a cloud over me every evening knowing I had to get up and go.
Anyhow, I thought I would let you know that in order to get up on time, I use 4 alarm clocks to awake me. They are all set to go off at slightly different times, and one is a clock radio turned to a staticy station at very high (very high) volume. I still hit the snoozes on all of them (I build in time for that). And they are all fast by slightly different amounts.
Is your work environment one where you can come in between 8 and 8:30 or something? Does not sound like it. If it is, you have some leeway there.
Well, good luck to you! I wonder if being a head case will work to your advantage? Like nobody will say anything because you might act out. I bet a few weird looks would get people off your back. Or weird noises.
Oh well--I hope to be joining the workforce soon so I can continue to eat!

Hi Shar & Thank you-
4 alarm clocks? Wow. That might help. I use only
one now and can find the snooze button in the
dark and with my eyes closed.I'm 'supposed' to be at work at 7am, and have over
an hour drive :(, but as long as I'm there by 8
it's OK. I found out today that my office (with a
large window & plenty of room) has been appropriated
during my absence. Now I'll get the small office
with no windows, that makes me want to scream.
Oh well, I need m o n e y. I think my ambition is
to win the lottery. I spend 2 dollars a week on it.
No luck yet.Hope you find a job that you like, meanwhile
enjoy your free time, it goes by quickly.

I'm currently on short-term disability from my job (for the second time now - I was only back for about a month).
Shar, I know what you mean about the alarm clocks!! At least now I know I'm not the only one. :) I've been using that same strategy for years, too! Before I went back to work last time, I bought an alarm clock (SonicBoom) complete with a bed vibrator and an option to plug in a flashing lamp! This actually helps. However, I tried putting cardboard and tape over the snooze bar to discourage it, and I just ended up resetting the alarm about 5 times each morning... Oh, well. :) Even with 3 alarm clocks, I still get used to sounds after a while and stop waking up, then have to rotate in a new one. Does that happen to you?
Harry, your concerns about going back to work are mine EXACTLY - I feel for you. When do you have to go? My thoughts and prayers will be with you, and keep us posted on how it goes!

I am assuming tomorrow is your first day back to work.
My best advice…smile alot and don't say much! It's worked for me for all these years and I'm 33 (oh right, you know, 34).
god bless you and good luck, Janice

I am definitely going to try to find that alarm clock you described!
I haven't gotten immune to mine yet, and I still hit the snooze buttons. But, I have two dogs that get up with the alarms, and their walking around will wake me up (they want breakfast). It's sort of like being a mom--you can sleep through a thunderstorm, but if the baby whimpers you're up in an instant.
If I can't find that clock, I will ask you for more info if that's ok.

Shar -
You can buy it at www.hsdc.org - I have the "Sonic Boom Clock w/ Shaker" :) There are other places to order it online, too; since it's kind of a specialty item (often, as in this case, found at stores specializing in the hearing impaired), it can be hard to find otherwise. It's expensive ($69.95), but for me, well worth it!!
By the way, I have a dog, also. He's like a child, I spoil him so much - you may know what I mean. :) Unfortunately, though, I still can't get him to wake me up. He won't get up until I do, unless I REALLY oversleep.
