BEST MED FOR WEIGHT GAIN??!!

Posted by z on June 18, 2000, at 12:52:06

HI,
I'M CURRENTLY TAKING AMITRIPTYLINE (ELAVIL), PAXIL,
MECLIZINE, AND RANITIDINE TO CONTROL ANXIETY-INDUCED
CHRONIC NAUSEA AND WEIGHT LOSS. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF
THERE IS ANYTHING BETTER THAN AMTRIPTYLINE (ELAVIL)
FOR GAINING WEIGHT? I'M VERY THIN AND WOULD LIKE TO
PUT ON AS MANY POUNDS AS POSSIBLE. ALSO, I'M A 22 YEAR
OLD MALE. ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Sorry, I had to grin. It's just that almost everyone is looking for ways to lose weight instead.

I'm skinny too. Doesn't matter what I eat or how much. But for a while I took Zyprexa. I was shocked. For the first time in my life I gained weight. I mean like 10 pounds in two weeks. For me that was just totally unbelievable. I couldn't gain weight to save my life. That is, until Zyprexa.

I don't take it any more and have lost all I gained without even trying. But hey, if you want weight, Zyprexa has my vote.

Remeron also can have considerable weight gain associated with it. But I've been taking Remeron for almost two years now and have had no weight gain.

Either of these would be good for anxiety too. But Zyprexa was the real powerhorse for gaining weight with me.

Ditto JohnL for my opinion. Zyprexa will definitely put pounds on almost anyone. It also has some very good AD qualities. After a few months the weight gain does stop and you can lose weight while still taking it if you eat properly and excersize.

I've heard a lot of people complain about Depakote
causing large weight gains.

Hi z,

If your doctor thinks Risperidal is appropriate for your condition, you might try that. It makes you crave carbohydrates and eat the house down. Remeron is also known to put the pounds on. My doctor told me he had prescribed it for an anorexic patient. I wish you luck.

Hi Kris,
Wellbutrin is a very stimulating AD. It is known to supress the appetite and boost energy. My doctor recently added that to my regimen of Celexa, Seroquel and Ritalin. I definitely need the Seroquel to offset the agitating effect Wellbutrin has on me. However, it seems most people don't get the side effect of agitation. Good luck.
