I'm 29 years old and I've pretty much felt depressed for as long as I can remember. It's only been in the last 4 years that I have been seeking help. I tried:
Paxil- made my stomach so upset that I couldn't function, Celexa- made me gag and vomit, Serzone-was ok....but didn't do much and kind of fizzled out.
So yesterday my Dr. put me on Effexor. It felt normal at first. I felt a little sick to my stomach and a little tired...but within about 2 hours after taking only one 37.5 XR pill I was in this totally euphoric state. I don't mean just a little happy....I mean like goosebumps from feeling so good, a grin from ear to ear, touching things for the sake of being able to feel things. It was very scary. I felt like I could do anything. My pupils were dialated, my jaw was tight and I only slept for about 3 hours all night. Today I feel horrible and I'm not sure I want to continue with this drug. I know it's supposed to make me feel better, and if that's how it was supposed to work then SIGN ME UP!!! But for some reason I fell like something was wrong...especially because I only had ONE PILL! Has anyone ever had an experience like this or does anyone have an idea as to why I may have reacted the way I did? Any input is appreciated.

It sounds like you became hypo-manic. Please call your doctor immediately and discuss this reaction with him/her.
Are you bipolar?

> AmyAmy, Effexor-XR does affect people quite quickly, from what I've heard (I felt less depressed after 3 or 4 days). You sound like you're pretty sensitive to it, and should discuss your reaction with your pdoc. I'm not sure I would agree with tdaneen that you had a "manic" reaction, but you might want to increase the drug very slowly, if you decide to continue it.

Amy-
Please call your prescribing doctor and tell him how you are feeling- it is very important!
I too had problems at first, and I at the suggestion of my doctor, decresed the dosage to half the 37.5 for the first couple of days and built up slowly. I vividly remember sitting at the dinner table as I watched my husband open the capsel and proceed to spilt the 37.5mg in half and fill an empty capsel with the other half. I had to build up slowly too- several days at each level and reached 150mg after 2 weeks.
Also- very important to take with food- never on an empty stomach- right after the meal is best for me. I now take it at night before I go to bed and have no problems/side effects what so ever.
Hope this helps!

When I did a trial of Effexor I had some symptoms when I upped the dose that made me wonder if Effexor might have some abuse potential at higher one time doses. Just a little bit wired like maybe 25 mcg of LSD. I quit Effexor because it made me too sleepy and killed interest and functionality in sex. >
