Hi, everyone,
Sorry about having *more* problems. FYI, it was worse this time and five posts have (probably) been lost. :-( Last week, we discovered and tried to block some unauthorized activity on the server. I thought it was going to help! But now I wonder...
Anyway, thanks again for your patience,
Bob

Thank goodness, no. I guess I should count my blessings. :-)

Just curious guys,
If this is an issue of outside infiltration, what difference does using or not using a Windows environment have to do with anything? I run Windows 95, 98, ME and NT on my 4 home systems and because of the protection software I use (and helped design) I believe my systems are bulletproof. I don't think the OS used is the issue here. IMHO.

James,
While I agree with you on 95% of everything you say here, and yes, this is a generic OS issue, I'll put any of my Windows based OS systems up against any hacker and bet you any amount of money that they can't break in. The stability of the system is not as much the problem as how you go about protecting it. I think the question that wasn't asked is "was it a virus or a hacker problem?" Two completely different animals....

NT receives the lowest score on the EPL, Evaluated
Products List of the National Security Council. Only Unix and flavors get the high ratings. Unix has been around far longer and the crackers have been attacking it for decades longer. Also keep in mind a real firewall in not "Blackice" or other softwear, these only look at the network layer while a real firewall (costing thousands of dollars) looks all the way down to the application
layer of the packet. Hackers can now scan behind some firewalls. If you were to subscribe to "Bugtrack" you would find that holes are discovered everyday in every OS. There is no such thing as a true secure site. My job is network admin, I spend some time each day dealing with hackers. All big time servers on the net are running a Unix like OS for security and many other reasons. MS is fine for desktops, I am using
it now.james

James here.....
At work we are behind a Cisco Firewall. The ISP stuff is not because it cannot, but we log heavly.
I sniff packets as needed. At home I use a Linux box running TCP/IP Wrappers, which logs all connections. All ports are closed excect what I need to surf, ect.

I don't know if this is relevant or not (I'm a computer novice when it comes to systems stuff), but I use a software called Zone Alert that tells me when an "unrequested" guest is poking around/has been sent to my computer when I'm on the internet. I operate in "stealth mode" so no response is given back to the that is sent to my computer. It also gives me the url number and other info about the uninvited guest if I request it.
I can also set which programs can and cannot cross into internet territory. It logs what internet access has taken place, and I can lock out the internet option to all activity when I want.
It's a good program. I have the free version that its maker allows for downloading. You can buy a fancier version if you want.

I have an idea--if there are technical problems here and we can't get onto the site, why don't we post messages at the egroups site psycho-babble-tips. So far, that site has only been used for the "links" component, but there is also a "messages" component, as well as a chat room. They all appear in blue on my screen, which I interpret to mean that when Dr. Bob set up the egroups site, he included these aspects of it (I think you have the option to include any or all of the features).

Sounds great to me! I admit I haven't gone to the egroups site yet, but I will. I don't like being isolated from my ilk.....
