I was once told that the only stupid question is the one you
dont ask so here goes. If a medication has "quit working" ie EffexorXR
will the withdrawal be the same as if it was still doing its thing?
I came off Prozac because it had "pooped out" after five years, and I don't
remember anything like withdrawal. Any answers out there. Thanks, Maribeth

Maribeth,
I believe the withdrawal will be the same whether the medicine is working for you or not. The withdrawal, of course, should be done with the help of your doctor. My doctor has helped me to withdraw from plenty of medicines that have stopped working for me. He put me on another one a.s.a.p. too and so I haven't had withdrawal that I noticed when it was done that way.

What Anne said--I have heard this before. Prozac doesn't have as much withdrawal because it has a much longer half life than effexor.

I think I misled ya'll when I used Prozac as an example. How about
with Effexor XR? I have heard such hellish stories about folks trying
to get off of it -- is it any easier to come off
if the med has pooped out? Maribeth

I am not sure, but I think the withdrawal symptoms are a problem with the poop out, too.

maribeth-my experience when meds poop-out is that there's no withdrawal cuz the meds, including effexor xr, aren't working. my p-doc switches me from one thing to another - with maybe a day off inbetween - and i've never had a withdrawal symptom.
but maybe i'm the exception, cuz most stuff doesn't work with me.
