Non - Med Routes for Panic Attacks . . . Success?

Posted by Gene on November 6, 2000, at 15:14:18

Greetings, all. Just wondering if anyone has had success fighting generalized anxiety and/or panic attacks without the use of any psychotropic meds. I've been on various dosages of Serzone - as little as 10 mg to as much as 200 mg - for a number of years, but I often wonder if it actually does anything since I feel only slightly better than I used to. I also suffer from depression, but it's not nearly as much of a problem as the anxiety.

I was wondering if anyone has attacked anxiety and esp. panic attacks via yoga, meditation, exercise, cognitive and behavioral therapy, and/or anything else. I'm seriously considering trying to do away w/ meds for good, but I'd like to hear from any others out there who tried this and what they experienced. Any stories, suggestions or contacts would be highly appreciated.

Wishing everyone on the board all the best.

Gene

Exercise, relation techniques and behavior therapy (there are books on Personal Behavior Therapy)all have helped me in the past. Meditation and yogo are beneficial, too, and they have helped me, too. Those things need to be practiced on a regular basis and to become a part of a person's life for them to do a lot of good. I need to get back into them! I take medicines since I got OCD and they help me but I need to do the other stuff, too. I need to give myself a push.

As if we all don't have enough to worry about...
I suggest reading the book "Your Medication May Be Your Problem". It pretty much suggests that these (our)drugs cause everything from emotional blunting to a permanent "chemical lobotomy".

Sigh. To me, this is kind of like reading that if you drink only bottled water, your teeth will rot out from lack of fluoride. Still, if you're considering coming off meds, it's an informative book. It talks about withdrawal in some detail.

Good luck!
