Best for Social Phobia?

Posted by jb on November 29, 2000, at 17:39:26

Hi, my best experience to date has been with Nardil (Phenelzine) and Klonopin (Clonazepam). I've tried Parnate (Tranylcypromine), various SSRI's, and low dosage Neurontin. Nardil and Klonopin have been, by far, the most efficacious. However, the side effects with Nardil, for me, weren't great: substantial weight gain and sexual dysfunction. Klonopin, for me, seems to really impair short-term memory.

Anyone with any ideas about other meds without these side effects? Anything new on Neurontin (higher dose?), or others?

Thanks. JB

My favorites here are either Adrafinil or Amisulpride, both better than either alone. But it's a totally different concept, involving ordering your own meds from overseas and self directing your own care. Not an appropriate option for a lot of people. But in my experience these drugs are very good for social phobia, very few if any side effects, no addiction, no withdrawal, cheap, and increase mental cognition as a side benefit. It may or may not be an appropriate avenue for you, but it's something to keep on the back burner for further consideration. Personally I like these a ton better than any of the zillion drugs my doctors prescribed.

That being said, another top option would be Zyprexa or Risperdal. Zyprexa seems generally more effective, though not always, but has more weight gain and sedation. I just think you might find good results in the antipsychotic category, which includes Amisulpride, Zyprexa, or Risperdal. You don't have to be psychotic to experience good results with these. They can be good for depression, anxiety, and social phobia, and they reperesent an avenue that hasn't yet been utilized in your treatment.

And of course, no matter what you do, mileage could vary. But in my opinion trying drugs from different classes that haven't yet been tried is the quickest way to find something that works and has side effects you can live with.

JB,

Besides an antipsychotic like amisulpride you may want to try klonopin but in combo with provigil, adrafinil, adderall or selegiline. This may eliminate the memory deficits of klonopin.

That's an interesting theory, Andrew. I'm taking both adderall and klonopin now. I think the adderall may counteract some of the memory problems and absentmindedness of klonopin. I now for one thing that I can certainly tolerate more klonopin while on Adderall. This, however, is not true with Neurontin, which causes rather severe memory problems. I only take Neurontin before social events. Also taking Paxil. It seems to me there is an adderall-paxil interaction. I think paxil down regulates dopamine receptors or something, thus making the adderall less potent.
