Second day off SSRIs/on amisulpride

Posted by S. Howard on December 13, 2000, at 20:30:26

I tapered off paxil and did okay. I've been gradually reducing dosages of seroquel and depakote until quitting completely as of yesterday. The paxil was ineffective and while the other two drugs were helpful
for my anxiety and insomnia, there was considerable emotional flattening and severe, rapid weight gain even while dieting.

Frankly, I feel like hell. Slept only 2 hours last night. Memory and concentration are a problem. I believe it's too soon to consider the effects of the amisulpride. Has anyone had similar experience with SSRI withdrawal and how long did it last? Any suggestion for counteracting these effects until I come up with a good psychopharmacologist? I'm having no luck with my present doctor.

Thanks-Gracie

So it's been since 12/13 you started Amisulpride and dropped the other stuff. Withdrawals gone yet? Amisulpride helping? Just following up. Would like to hear you're doing better.

John-
Thanks for asking, I had to go back on the seroquel for awhile because I wasn't sleeping, but now I'm out of that too. I'm doing okay but kind of edgy, smoking too much.

Right now I'm not taking the amisulpride. Interesting thing happened. I called my stepmother, who works in the psychiatric dept. of a large hospital, and asked her to do some networking for me to find a GOOD pyschopharmacologist. I gave her all my symptoms and complaints, which I attributed to the SSRIs -
rapid weight gain, swelling, chronic fatigue, and little or no help from a number of anti-depressants. Every one of these doctors asked her if I'd ever had my thyroid checked, which I have not.

Now wouldn't it be a kick in the pants if, after everything I've been through this last year, that my depression/irritability/mood swings were caused by hypothyroidism instead of bipolarism?

I have an appointment with a new GP on Jan 2 and hopefully will get a referral to an endocrinologist. If it's not my thyroid (but I'll bet you a big Pepsi it is), I have the name of a new pdoc and I'm holding on to the amisulpride.
(I never did get the adrafinil I ordered - they were out of stock and I'm either on back-order or they cancelled it.) I wanted to hold onto the amisulpride until I got the other, and also I wanted to be clean for my blood tests that I expect to be getting here in a couple of days.
There is SOMETHING definately, physically wrong with me...my face is puffy, my limbs are swollen, and I'm still gaining weight after stopping the SSRIs.

So thanks for asking, I'll let you know how it goes...
Gracie
