I guess Celexa and alcohol do not mix

Posted by Amanda on December 12, 2000, at 14:58:00

Oh boy, I'm in trouble. I'm 22 years old and I started taking Celexa 12 days ago. I was given a sample package until I could fill my prescription (which I haven't had a chance to do yet.) If I had, I may have noticed that this is the type of medication that you really don't want to mix with alcohol. I know it's a bad idea in general, but I didn't realize how bad. Anyway, I had a couple of drinks the other day and I blacked out. I found out later that I went down on some guy that was not my boyfriend. I don't even remember (but there were witnesses,) and I also found out that I was the one who initiated the whole thing. I have NEVER initiated anything in my life. I told my boyfriend, who I had been with for 2 1/2 years, because I felt I should be honest with him. Needless to say, I do not have a boyfriend now. I was talking to someone today that said taking anti-depressents and drinking can make you very promiscuous. Has anyone had this problem? Can someone help explain it? Please help!

James here.....

What is there to explain ? You cannot drink while
on Celexa. It is clear in your case there are significant
conquences. Yes, this does happen to some people.

I've had similar experiences when drinking on SSRIs. I don't usually black out unless I'm really screwed up, but I do become totally uninhibited. BE CAREFUL, especially if you are doing any other recreational substances

> What dosage were you taking when this occurred? My husband suffers from "blackspots" too in his memory when he drinks alcohol. He is taking 40 mg a day and has been on Celexa for over a year. He suffers from the blackspots sometimes when he isn't even drinking. Any clues?

Not that Celexa and alcohol *do* mix, but another possibility is that the drinks were laced with something else...

I also thought that, but also, could Amanda have been misdiagnosed as depressive, when actually she could have bipolar disorder? A manic episode (break?) could explain some of the impulsivity and disinhibition. The combination of Celexa and alcohol causing a manic switch. Even though the odds are against this, it is something to consider.

Just a thought, Cam
