I am trying celexa for the second time I tried it about 3 months ago for 2 weeks, but was very agitated on it.I am now on doxepin ,which is not working all that well The pdoc suggested trying celexa again at a low dose.So I'm taking 5 mg.I still get pretty agitated a couple of hours afterwards, relieved by ativan. How long is it worth pursuing the celexa-will the agitation pass as I have heard it might,or would a different SSRI be better?By the way I am very appreciative of this board ,and the helpful comments I have received Julia

Julia,
I don't think it's the right med for you. Getting agitated on 5 mg is rare indeed. I found Celexa to not work for me, but I had no side effects till I went from 20 mg to 30 mg, then I was extremely agitated. Paxil worked well for me but I weaned off it after 4 months and it did not work well the 2nd time. I have tried Serzone, very agitating after 2 weeks, and Zoloft which has not done much. I am going to try Prozac this week. Try another med if the agitation on Celexa continues through 10 mg. Good luck to you.

If the Celexa is helping with your depression, I would give it a longer trial to see if the agitation goes away. Two weeks is not long enough. I think the minimum trial should be 8 or 9 weeks, even with 5 mg. If it turns out that 5 mg is enough to control your depression, then don't increase it. I read a pharmacology website that said the usual effective Celexa dosage is 5 mg- 60 mg.
I personally take 20 mg Celexa with success. My agitated side effect mostly went away after about 5 or 6 weeks.
