Stopping Paxil and starting again

Posted by Jackster on January 2, 2001, at 1:54:20

Hi - I was on Paxil 40mg for 3 years for Agoraphobia - worked wonderfully - I finally had a life. Decided to slowly go off it - but the panic attacks came back. When I went back onto it, it didn't seem to work as well. Has anyone else had this experience?

For some reason, once you've stopped an AD it is not always as effective, after restarting and you may have to switch to another AD to have the same effect or possibly up the dosage (though your PD would be a better source on this or some of the other folks on-line here, who've more experience on this front).

The exact same thing happened to me on Paxil. I was only on it a few months but it worked very well, and I came off it. My symptoms returned and I went on it again, but it did not work as well. If you find a med that works [and it is trial and error] you should probably stay on it. Paxil worked well for me, but Zoloft, Serzone and Celexa have not. I'm going to try Prozac and hope it helps me. Good luck.

I tried Celexa which didn't help, and Imiprimine gave me terrible side effects. Start the Prozac really slowly - I got really anxious side effects from it and wish I'd never tried it.

> > I would love some input if someone can offer any. I just started Paxil today in combination with 300 mg of wellbutrin (not sure if staying on wellbutrin is i the plans, so far it has done nothing) but it has only been a couple hours since I took 10mgs of Paxil and I am already pretty nautious. Will this pass soon and how long till anyone noticed it took effect. Also, I am really scared and frustrated because nothing seems to work for me. I sometimes feel like it's all in my head (ha ha) I mean I feel guilty because I can't get well and get happy like everyone wants for me. I want it too more than anybody but it seems like i keep defeating myself. I just want a little peace or some coast time where everything is okay. It doesn't even have to be great! just okay. Thanks for listening .

This sounds exactly like me!!!! I feel for you. Talktoyour doc about Effexor XR. I was on the same meds as you....same feelings. The nausea of the Paxil does go away but it also numbs emotions. (That's what happened to me.) The Effexoris like the paxil but keeps more of yourself. If you are anything like me you feel down, tired, fatigued, sad, defeated, frustrated, and you feel like nothing will help. That wasme. Effexor has me feeling....dare I say.....normal. As with any medication it is different for everyone. I started on 75mg. , and it has worked greaat. Above all check with your doc!!!

>Aubs, thanks for answering. I'm very happy to hear that effexor is working well for you. I have been on Effexor for the last year and a half actually, right before the wellbutrin. The problem for me was (and it is a rare one) is that I began to bleed all the time - thus the name PMSgirl - I have been to doctors, gynecologists and therapists and everyone told me it was stress but since I quit the Effexor, there has been zero sign of abnormality. Otherwise you are right I think in all other circumstances, it worked well for me. I was on 300mgs of Effexor. I made the mistake of thinking I could go off the meds and feel fine and now I know thats not true. I just need to truly accept it.

I know what you mean. I wish I'd never stopped the Paxil - I'd be quite happy to stay on it for the rest of my life after the hell I've been through after being on about 4 meds after it. When I started taking Xanax I started to spot bleed all the time. The PDoc thinks it's just a coincidendce. Yeah right. And I bet it'll be a coincidence that the bleeding stops when I stop the Xanax. I hope things are better for you now.
