Does anyone know what happens when a person has bipolar disorder? I understand what is thought to happen when a person is depressed - neurotransmitters and all. What is happening when a person has a manic episode? Are Bipolars thought to be "wired" differently than unipolars?
Thanks!!

Ah Chris, beautifully said. I guess there are so many different things going on involving various neurotransmitters (epinephrine), hormones, psychological factors, etc. that there are no clear answers. There have been studies showing different levels of cortisol, human growth hormones, differing sizes of the right and left thalamus- it looks like everything that can be quantitated can be shown to be different than 'normal' is different. So who knows? I'm sure many of us would love that answer. Take care, Judy

I agree whole heartedly, too! It certainly can seem like the whole world is turned upside down.
Judy, you mentioned some more specific medical concepts. Are there any sites/articles you could point me to that discuss these?
Thanks!

Hi Kingfish,
I think I saw this study in the Stanley Foundation Bipolar Newsletter but basically they studied a gentleman who cycled every 24 hours (and I thought I had it bad), measuring all the parameters I mentioned. If I remember correctly they treated him by keeping him in darkness 16 hours/day until he achieved some stability. Their site is www.bipolarnetwork.org- check out their archived newsletters. Take care, Judy
