What have been your experiences with resperdol? I read that it is not sedating like the others.

Hi Andre:
Risperdal has been by far the best AD I have taken. It miraculously got rid of my depression. Before Risperdal, I could not get out of bed or do anything at all. I was completely unable to function.
It was sedating at first ( the first week) but that left. It worked immediately which was also a nice surprise.
A month later it quit working and I was having crying spells. I then uped the dosage and got relief again.
I also take Mirapex concurrently and the 2 together work wonders.

Best of Luck to you,
Nat

I took Risperdal for about a week. It made me very groggy and almost without emotion. I felt like a Zombie. If you try it you will probably know within a week whether it is really for you.

Personally I reacted much better to Zyprexa. It is sedating to begin with but my body adjusted to it after about two weeks.

:) :) :) :) :) :)
I really liked risperdal but it gave me some hormonal problems with oxytocin or prolactin. It was too sedating for me at 1 mg. so I would take .75. I think I actually had a euphoric feeling from risperdal! I took it for about 2.5 years. It took me longer than a week to get used to. I switched to seroquel about two mos. ago and don't like it as much and found it too sedating at 50mg. so I take 25 mg. Still, it's better than nothing. It'll do. My psychia. won't prescribe zyprexa for me because I'm already 50# overweight and he said everyone gains a lot of weight from it. Do you find that to be true for you?

Hi. Much to my pdoc's disbelief I had a similar reaction to Promazine (English sedative, closely related to chlorpromazine) which would make itself apparent within hours of taking the drug.

My question to you, please, is how long was it before this 'euphoria' made itself apparent?

Do you mean b4 it started working?

Zyprexa, whilst quite tolerable, gave me a v. sweet tooth. I visibly piled the pounds on & don't normally have much of an appetite!

Thanks,
Jah.

Dear JahL,
After I was adjusted to it it made me feel pretty good in seemingly a high way but I went off it. I really missed how good it made me feel. Since I'm on this other drug now I've felt like taking a risperdal with it. I know someone who is prescribed it that way (2 neuroleptics). I take such low doses of all meds. that it could help. I'm starting to feel like a pill factory!

I think it took about 3 weeks for the full effects to work for me but I immediately felt better upon taking it. I always had a good feeling with it or a high feeling. Not to the point of drunkeness, though. I think I felt really good in the same way with celexa and effexor at first, too. But that stopped, yet with risperdal I always felt sort of high. I liked that effect, too.

I've piled on a few too but that's okay, I believe.
take good care,
r.anne

Yes, I got the usual weight gain. Probably about an extra 40 pounds and it's hard to get off but it can be done. All of the weight went on in the first couple of months and then leveled off. From what I've seen on these boards and others, this is quite a common experience.

Pfizer is coming out with a a new option called Zeldox. it is supposed to be similar to Zyprexa but with far fewer side effects 9including no weight gain). It is FDA approved but they have to make some changes to the package inserts which is delaying the release.

I had a huge weight gain on zyprexa, apprently it is considered the worse offender of the group. On risperdal, I may have gained a few pounds initially (it's hard to tell when your on multiple drugs/offenders)but it tends to level out- I think zyprexa is more of an exponential weight gain. Hope you find something you can live with. Bristol-Myers Squibb is running clinical trials on a variant of zyprexa that has no weight gain. It is called aripiprazole. I called them and got the name of local clinic doing the trials but it involves a 24 day hospital stay and they use a placebo (which is why you are probably hospitalized) That is not for me, but maybe others are interested. Take care- Judy

Dear Judy,

Thanks for ferreting out another investigational drug for us.

Ziprazidone (Zeldox) is supposed to be approved for marketing imminently. It is very much like a Zyprexa, more so than aripiprizole, but without weight gain. After reading some of the few abstracts available on Medline about aripiprazole, I would not expect it to be much of an adjunct for depression (simplistic guess), but it makes for a novel way to approach schizophrenia as it acts as an agonist at presynaptic dopamine autoreceptors in addition to the usual antagonism of postsynaptic receptors.

Where were you able to find out about aripiprizole? Do you have any good resources that provide information about investigational drugs?

Thanks again.

- Scott

Hi Scott,
I'm shocked I uncovered a drug before you ;-). Anyway, I'm sure I do the same things as you- monitor the NIH drug trials, enlist in 'trial' clinics- there are tons in so. Cal and they call me all the time. This particular one came about because I used to work for a major pharmaceutical co. as a research scientist and still have some connections. I'll try to be more aware of the novel AD's in the pipeline- since I can't take them I don't pay much attention, but I promise to post if I hear or read something new. As an aside, you sound a lot like me in choosing meds. Did that happen because you are treatment resistant? How does your pdoc feel about it? Mine said he feels about 75% of his patients are noncompliant with meds so he tries to be really open so they feel comfortable enough to be honest. I've found the vast majority of shrinks react in anger when I say I want to try something different, whether it's a med or dose change. Has that been your experience? Take care, Judy

Too right. Something about professional pride/insecurity I think.

Jah.

Aripiprazole worked in 9 days for depression in me (I think). I'm waiting for the mania to come now. A little tremor in hands left over from the residual lithium.

Aripiprazole has reduced the mania too and I am genuinely able to feel happiness and optimism even though I am out of a job right now.

Plus, aripiprazole doesn't cause weight gain, I've heard.

Sorry for sounding like a commercial for aripiprazole but it is the best medicene I've taken in a long time.
