neurontin and herbs and weight gain etc

Posted by soni on January 24, 2001, at 5:10:07

Dear All

I started on Neurontin 600mg a day in October for reflex sympathetic dystrophy of the shoulder. At the time I was also taking seroxat(paxil) 20 mg. I have gradually come off seroxat over the last month and this is my 5th day free of any seroxat. I am experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

Nerontin makes me sleepy and I didn't want to experiment with higher doses without coming off seroxat first with the consent of my doctor first of course.

My questions:

Does Neurontin increase appetite or just wanter retention?

Is it helpful to take other things with it, eg, kava kava, etc to combat some of the side effects which for me include lethargy. Is there anything to combat fogginess( or is that just my withdrawal symptoms from paxil)?

Do you have to take it all the time to benefit from it. Does one ever come off from it with a measure of remission?

Thank you
Nina

I can't answer most of your questions about Neurontin because I've never tried to get off of it. I take 1000mg a day as a mood stabilizer. I don't believe that it causes weight gain. Paxil is notorious for weight gain, though. I have not found any increase in appetite or water retention with Neurontin.

For me Neurontin definitely increased appetite, even at very low doses (i.e., 100 mg or even less). However, I was on a higher dose for quite a while (300 mg is high for me--I feel woozy and dizzy)--and I do think this side effect has lessened over time (2 years now). Lower dose probably helps too.

Following the Zone Diet (30/40/30--protein/carbs/fats) or a rough approximation seems to help--eating protein with every meal and trying not to eat sweets (I try to eat fruit instead).

Good luck.
