Another Topomax question

Posted by Rich on January 25, 2001, at 9:49:57

Hi all. This thread has not been used in awhile, but I thought that I would post here anyway. I just started taking 25 mg/night of Topomax at my psychiatrist's recommendation. I suffer from terrible social anxiety disorder and have tried numerous anti-depressants with very little relief. I currently am taking 90mg of Remeron a day and .5mg of Klonopin as needed when I am expected to have alot of social interaction. I have gained about 30 lbs over the last year while taking anti-depressants and have expressed my displeasure to my Dr. over this weight gain. She said that she thinks that the Topomax will help with weight losss and offer relief for the anxiety.

My question is, has it helped anyone's anxiety that posts here? It seems to me that most people are taking this med for bipolar and manic depression..

Thanks for any responses..

Rich

Sorry I'm not answering your ? here, but I was told by my pdoc that Remeron is now being given to terminal AIDS patients because it makes normal people gain so much weight. I gained about 20 in seriously about 2 weeks. That is definitely the culprit weightwise and it's a real bitch.

Wow! That is unbelievable! I guess it makes sense though seeing as how much weight I have gained on Remeron in a relatively short period of time. I was 6'1" 180lbs before I went on it and now am about 210lbs.. I am lucky that I am tall, but I would still like to shed the weight and thus far exercise has not done very much.

Guess I'll just have to see how the Topomax works. I am really hoping that it will help with the anxiety also though.

Thanks for the response,
Rich

Rich,

I traded in valium for depakote. Depakote worked better but had too many side effects mostly weight gain. So I traded in depakote for topamax to lose the depakote weight and so far I have been slowly losing weight on the topamax but it doesn't have the same calming effect as either the depakote or the valium. It takes the edge off every day life but I think if I was in a very stressful situation I'd be in big trouble.
