memory loss and trouble forming sentences

Posted by Jon Mey on January 26, 2001, at 22:24:26

I have been on 75 mg for about six months now. My mood has significantly improved since I started taking effexor. My only drawback is that I have trouble remembering conversations and common everyday occurences. I also seem to have trouble with vocabulary and in the forming of sentences. I am wondering if anyone else has had similar side-effects!

These are common side effects of Effexor. Sometimes they dissipate... never did for me, I had to switch back to Celexa.

I find the effexor has helped my concentration and memory, though occasionally I blurt out wierd things (stuff that makes no sense and I have no ideas where it came from) and I'm noticing a more frequent occurence of the wrong word coming out. The wrong word thing has happened with all the ADs that I've used for any length of time. You get use to it!

Jon Mey,

You may want to ask your doctor to let you try Aricept. Originally used for Alzheimers patients, it is now being used for cognitive damage caused by various mental disorders and meds as well.

I have only been on it for a couple of weeks but I really think it's working for me. The first thing I noticed was that I was dreaming again - very vividly - and that I remembered details of my dreams after waking. Now, I am not "searching for words" as often. My speech is more fluid and not as choppy and pausing.

Yes, I have had some word retrieval problems on effexor, as I did on Paxil. It seems now that I am not on as high a dose as I used to be, it is not as much of a problem. But since you are on only 75 mg, I don't know what to tell you, except talk to your doctor.

Whenever I increased the dosage of effexor I had a very difficult time carieing on conversations with people. I could not say 3 or 4 words back to back without having to pause. Also, whenever I get into a long sentence I forgot what the hell I was talking about in the first place.
Not only does effexor affect my speech in that I cannot form sentences I also have "cotton mouth" or dry mouth. This side effect makes it difficult for me to pronounce sylables that involve my lips touching.

These 2 side effects are very, very bothersome for me as my job requires that I talk to people all day long.

Am taking 375mg
