Does Geodon have a better side-effect profile than Risperdal, Zyprexa, or Seroquel? And is it possibly better at relieving depression? Thanks.

Dear Sal,
I have tried all three and am now on Geodon. Zyprexa caused the usual weight gain, Seroquel didn't do much of anything and Risperdal caused extreme blurred vision. Geodon, for me, has no side effects whatsoever and is helping with depression, ruminating thoughts and anxiety.

The only side-effect I have with Geodon is some sexual dysfunction (I'm male, that might make a difference). Geodon does not make me feel sedated, depressed, or gain weight as with Zyprexa. Zyprexa had the same sexual side-effects for me. Seroquel didn't do much of anything for me either. Risperdal didn't work for me either.

Hey, thanks for replying. Do you also use an antidepressant, or do you think you will just be able to rely on the Geodon?

I use Lamictal and it helps a lot for depression. The Geodon helps with my manic problems.

I am on Lamictal too - 100mg a.m. and titrating up to 100mg afternoon. I am getting some antidepressant benefits already. Trileptal was my primary mood stabilizer but wasn't doing enough for my rapid cycling, afternoon mania and depressive symptoms. It did, however, get my out of control moods to a reasonable level. The Geodon has helped me with mania as well.

Unfortunately for me, Geodon made me feel very disassociated, and after 3 days on it (at only 10mg, 2Xday), I was depressed and labile. I didn't feel any positive effects.
I've only tried a little bit of irregular Zyprexa (I'm very concerned about the weight gain), but it helps me a lot in getting out of my head and back into the world. It gives me a different kind of anti-anxiety effect than what I have gotten from other meds (mood stabilizers, ADs and benzos). I haven't tried any of the other atypical anti-psychs.

Cece,I'm sorry to hear that you had such a negative reaction to Geodon. I guess it isn't the wonder drug I hoped it would be. Which of the other antipsychotics are you considering next? You might want to go back to Zyprexa 5.0mg and wait to see if you really do gain weight on it. From what I see written on Psycho-Babble, it is not a 100% certainty. I was on 5.0mg for a few weeks and didn't see a trend towards weight-gain. Although I did experience a mild increase in appetite, I was able help offset that by making some changes in my eating habits. You won't know unless you try it.
Did Neurontin help at all? It sometimes soothes anxiety.
Good luck.
