alkie prozac

Posted by sar on May 14, 2001, at 22:55:11

I know that this is ridiculous, I know that I pledged to stop drinking on PSB, but I haven't. I think I'm straight-up an alcohol-dependent person...wondering if subconsciously maybe I don't really want to get better because I continue to drink...?

Anyway, my question is whether my Prozac (which I started taking about 2 weeks ago) will kick in if I'm drinking a bit nearly everyday. Does the alcohol cancel the Prozac out?

thanks,
sar

I don't know if it would interfere with the effect of prozac - they (the drug co.s) usually advise that you don't drink on ADs just to cover themselves in case something goes wrong. I suppose it would also depend on how much you are drinking.

I am curious if Prozac helps you to stop drinking. My Dad is an 'alkie' (although won't admit it) and I wonder if ADs would help him give up. He went into hospital recently with a suspected heart attack that turned out to be a stomach disorder - resolves to give up the cigarettes but doesn't seem to see that it's probably the alcohol that caused the problem.

Please let me know if it helps.

Swift, Robert M. Drug Therapy: Drug Therapy for Alcohol Dependence. New England Journal of Medicine. 340(19):1482-1490, May 13, 1999:
"In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of fluoxetine in 51 patients with major depression and alcohol dependence, fluoxetine improved depression and reduced the total number of drinks consumed during the trial by 50 percent, as compared with placebo."

thanks, Jackie & Sal. It seems that my alc. tolerance has lowered a bit since starting the prozac, but it the cravings haven't diminished.

I'm on beer right now but tonight comes my newest pledge--that I've gotta gotta quit the alc tomorrow.

I hope everything works out w/ yr dad, Jackie. I know someone age 23 w/ cirrhosis of liver, a bipolar who has had ECT...prozac is my second try at meds and I'm trying to hold on tight, I began way too late.

> Sar,

Yes, alcohol will definitely interfere with the Prozac.
Believe me, I just learned this yesterday from my
doctor.
I have ADD and apparently anxiety, as well. I went
to a new doctor yesterday because I just could not
relax without having a drink (or a few).
He explained how the alcohol severely interferes with
the Prozac and gave me an ultimatum to either not
drink for the next week (so my system is clear before he
gives me any new medication). If I do drink, he will
make me take antabuse. That is how serious the interaction
with the Prozac is with alcohol.
Even 2 or 3 per day. That is what I drink and the above
is what he told me.
Maybe you need an additional medication to to relieve
your restlessness.

I know that this is ridiculous, I know that I pledged to stop drinking on PSB, but I haven't. I think I'm straight-up an alcohol-dependent person...wondering if subconsciously maybe I don't really want to get better because I continue to drink...?
