QUESTION 4 U

Posted by Mr. Scott on July 1, 2001, at 20:58:06

Has anyone on this board of miserable cats had first or even second hand experience with 1)Wellbutrin 2)Serzone 3)Remeron.

If you have had positive experience please let me know with which. I can't and won't tolerate SSRI's any longer. Prozac and Zoloft SUCK!

Scott

This is based on my experience, anecdotal, and scientific evidence:

I took Wellbutrin for a month and a half. I had no side-effects.
Here is why Wellbutrin is a good deal:
*It has no anticholinergic side-effects.
*It has few, if any sexual side-effects. In fact, it may even improve sex drive and alleviate anorgasmia for some.
*Wellbutrin interacts negatively with few drugs, thus one could add most antidepressants to it (if need be).
*People like the stimulating effect of it.
*The new SR formulation can be taken 2 times a day instead of 3 times a day.
*No blood tests are needed.
*Wellbutrin IR is not as expensive as the SSRI's, mirtazapine, or venlafaxine.

Regardless of whether you will gain weight on Remeron or not, I ask you to consider it, because it is perhaps the best medication that has come out in the last 5 years. And I will explain why:

Here are the benefits of Remeron:

--It can be used for all types of depression, anxiety, OCD, and insomnia.
--It is convienient because it is taken only once at bedtime.
--It may improve libido and sexual performance (its the only medication that improves mine). Dr. Bob Hsieung's fellow doctors recommend it for sexual dysfunction.
--You can take Remeron with most antidepressants except MAOIs.
--It has none of the anticholinergic effects of SSRIs.
--It has gained recognition as a very useful medication from psychiatrists in only four years of FDA approval.

I myself started Remeron at 60 mg right away and had no side-effects. I had no weight gain or sedation during the day. http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Mirtazapine-for-SSRI-ADRs.html

Serzone (nefazodone)
*No anticholinergic side-effects.
*Little or no sexual side-effects.
*Tolerance develops to the sedation side-effect
*It has dual action on serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition.
*It fights anxiety and OCD as well as depression, since it works as an antagonist on the 5HT2A receptor and on serotonin reuptake inhibition.
*It can be conveniently taken all at bedtime.
*It is less expensive than SSRI's in the U.S.
*No blood tests required.
*It improves sleep quality (REM sleep).

Wellbutrin-
I had positive responses with this drug right away. It was very activating. I did not continue with it because I found myself becoming overly aggressive and what I call "snappy." I was easily irritated, almost like I was cruising along at the speed of light and nothing could keep up with me and that really bugged me. I found myself becoming too bothered in traffic, when people were late, etc. I have known people to do very well on this drug though.

Serzone-
My doctor tried me on this drug after Wellbutrin. I fealt like a complete stoner. I had blurred vision, loss of short term memory (had frequent episodes of, "well, how did I wind up here?") I didn't even want to drive on this drug and took a few days off of work. These symptoms came as soon as I started on the drug. My doctor told me that this wears off after about a month, but I couldn't stand it. I didn't stay on this drug either.

Good luck.

I think I took wellbutrin a while ago, but can't remember :). The serzone was ok, but I had the side effect of craving alcohol, a lot. I guess other people get this side effect with SSRI's (I got the side effect from SSRI's too, but not as strongly). I had weird/kinda creepy dreams with serzone, and my sleep didn't seem as restful, but all in all I think it was better than zoloft and prozac. You might want to try it because it is an SNRI, so if the SSRI's aren't working, then this might, and I don't think most people get the side effect of craving alcohol.

Mr Scott

I talke Well & Remeron. It's not a bad combo, in fact it's one ot the "big guns" combos mentioned in Stahls books and elsewhere. They balance out in side-effects, ie, Well gives you energy at the price of some anxiety, but Remeron's main side effect is somnolence, (and weight gain for some - not me though). So the side effects sort of cancel each other out.

Remeron works on Serotonin and Well works on Norepinephrin and a little on Dopamine, so in theory you are covered on all fronts.

Mr Scott,

I have tried all 3 of the meds that you mentioned. Unfortunately, virtually every AD with the exception of MAOIs causes unbearable hyperanxiety when I reach a therapeutic dose. I experienced the same result with these 3 meds. I do want to say that after 3 days on Remeron, I woke up with my brain and thought processes the clearest they have been in recent memory. Unfortunately, the hyperanxiety started after I had been awake for about 2 hours. Consequently, I went back on Parnate. Notwithstanding my lack of tolerance, I would start with Remeron if I were you.
