My sister (21) has just been diagnosed with a "mild form" of epilepsy based on the results of an EEG. She has never had a true "seizure," but she has blacked out a couple of times and sort of "spaces out" for a few minutes. Does anyone know where I can find out more about this? Also, my father was recently diagnosed with ALS. These aren't related, are they? I don't believe they are.
Thanks in advance.

James here....
Yes there are several kinds of seizures assoc with epilepsy that do not involve the classic violent shaking that most assoc with seizures.
EEG readings are the one of the difinative ways
epilepsy is Dx-ed.james

I was thinking of Neurontin or Lamictal augmentation for you. These are drugs with a benign side-effect profile and a lot of popularity on this group.

My daughter was diagnosed with complex partial seizures in 1986. SHe ws on tegretol for years and still had breakthrough seizures. AFter much researching, I found a doc who prescribed felbatol and she hasn't had a seizure since 1993.
Felabtol is a great drug, but the problem is that
a few years after it came out, it was practically banned because some people died from it. However, we researched it with an epilepsy specialist and the people who died were also on many other drugs such as chemotherapy. In any case, we signed a release and she has her blood work done and she has been totally fine.
This is the end of the thread.
