rapid cycle bipolarity x bipolarity?

Posted by geekUK on July 22, 2001, at 19:20:19

this has been bothering me, I seem to flip in and out of good and bad times frequently. depakote it seems has evened this out a little, leaving me persistantly depressed. but I also seem to float in and out of depression and happyness over a longer timespan, a 2-3times a year, maybe. is it possible to have two currents of bipolar running at the same time??
if so lithium is the choise to add, yes?? and what chance do I have convincing the docs to give me two potentialy lethal (particularly Li) when they point blank state that I am not bipolar (dispite only 30 min verbal questionare!)any tips for dealing with dangerous docs (when you cant find a new one -NHS)

In bipolar disorder, cycle length is a very individual thing- I have had cycles last a few days and some several months. It sounds as if depakote may not be the best mood stabilizer for you. (And if you think that's making you depressed, try lithium). As many on this forum have stated, lamictal is one of the few that has AD properties. Why not give that a try before a not particularly effective combo. (From someone who has been on every mood stabilizer and combo)- judy

Judy, Am butting in on a thread here. . .I think we've talked before. My pdoc has said I'm unequivocably BPII, and I'm coming to think I've been Rapid Cycler for so long, it's all I know of normal. . .Have just started omega-3 regimen, and snipping *tiny* bits of Top. . .and I feel oddly -- unswept away by my feelings, up or down. Which usually happens all day long, some days worse than others. I don't know if I'll ever *write* again. . .or paint.

But any feedback would be welcome!

Thanks,
Zo

Of course! I have rapid cycling BPII (three-week cycles) and have major seasonal depressions twice a year overlaid on top of that! That is absolutely astounding that any pdoc nowadays would flatly dispute a BP diagnostic assertion based on a patient's insistence. Typically, the patient is disputing a BP diagnosis! I think that many pdocs are still hung up with Freudian crap regarding repression/denial trips. If you resist something-then they must be onto something! Not to mention if you find a benzo or stimulant working for you (despite the fact that you are not abusing it), then there must be some occult substance abuse issue that must be dealt with!

Lithium is still very useful. In my own personal situation, Li monotherapy beats Depakote monotherapy hands down. Depakote (by itself) just does't have the antidepressant prophylaxis that Li has (some will find differently-but these are my own findings personally). Bottom-line: If I was offered only Li and Depakote to choose from for monotherapy it would be the Lithium.

Yes me again,
Without effexor I guess I'm the rare Ultra rapid cycler with effexor I'm BP1/2?
The questionaire for BP1 was BP2, did BP2 and said possible BP1 .
It's like a quick brain metabilism energy surges and drops without xternal stimuli .People always commented upon my 2 extremes, irrational behaviour.
Can b hereditory- mother has it-self medicates, lots of mental illness drug abuse shitzophrenia in family guess it all merges through the genes and creates an odd un-pigeonholed illness that stumps the pyschos.
Effexor lenghens the moods and instead of agression/irritation ~ manic??,I get hypomanic.
