My girlfriend has been on 50mg Zoloft for 7 weeks. While it has helped her mood and general outlook, she has had diarrhea nearly every day for the last three weeks. She has a history of recurring IBS, but has not noticed the pain & discomfort that usually accompanies her IBS bouts. While i have seen diarrhea listed as a potential side effect, would it show up immediately after starting zoloft, or nearly a month later as in her case?

My guess would be that her IBS is unrelated to zoloft use. The reason for my guess is based on my own experience: I noticed upon starting zoloft (and I've started it two or three times) that there is about one bout of loose bowels upon the first or second dose, and then that effect subsides. Althought it is true that maybe zoloft has a continuing laxative effect to a small degree, in the same way that Paxil, oddly enough, has a constipating effect that persists.
Maybe she's eating something different? I think zoloft makes bowels more sensitive, such that if you drink some coffee (also has a run-to-the-bathroom effect) and maybe eat something you're not accustomed to, you might be dashing for the can in a way you might not have before taking zoloft.
Hope that helped. I don't usually talk about bowels online, but I did it just for you! ;o)

I have IBS/d, and all of the SSRi's cause quite severe diarrhea with me. In the case of Zoloft-it was so bad I would be waking in the middle of the nite. I would get diarrhea on any of them within a couple of days.

I had to quit taking Zoloft because of loose stools and muscle aches (back). It never went away.
This is the end of the thread.
