DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO RE: USING PROVIGIL AS AN AUGMENT FOR MAOI'S, MOOD STABILIZERS, ETC? I KNOW IT'S HAD SOME SUCCESS FOR ADD KIDS; EVEN THOUGH IT'S MAIN FUNCTION IS AS A TREATMENT FOR NARCOLEPSY. HOW DOES IT WORK SINCE IT IS NOT AN AMPHETAMINE?
THANKS,
JEFF T.

Actually, from what I've heard, Provigil is probably used more off-label than for its labelled use (narcolepsy). Note that it isn't labelled as a treatment for narcolepsy, but rather, for "excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy." It's been found useful in both childhood and adult ADD, as well as EDS in conditions besides narcolepsy.
I tried adding Provigil to Parnate (60 mg). 150 mg of Provigil didn't do anything noticeable, but 200 mg made me very jittery. My blood pressure was also modestly elevated (around 130/85, I think). The 200 mg dose did, however, improve my concentration and focus.
It's mechanism of action is unknown but may involve glutamate (increasing rekease), GABA (decreasing release), dopamine (blocking reuptake), and/or norepinephrine (activating alpha1-adrenergic receptors, directly or indirectly) at specific sites. Some of the results have been seemingly contradictory.

Anyway, I tried provigil to augment nardil and had a paradoxical effect--became so sleepy that I could barely
ever keep my eyes open. I gave it a several week trial, then gave up. There have been a few other posters with the
same reaction. I don't understand why.
