I've been on Prozac for 4 1/2 months and I just started losing my hair. Have people had this experience and what did you do about it? My doc said to get off of it immediately but I'm hesistant because I'm trying to get pregnant and they won't give me anything else but Prozac. Do people have any stories to tell or advice/information it would be greatly appreciated!

I was on Prozac for about 5 years and suffered no abnormal loss of hair.

I endured hair loss for about 6 months when I was on 60 mgs. Prozac and 30 mgs. Buspar. It was temporary; my hair grew back normally while still on that dosage. I have relatively thick hair so it wasn't terribly noticable to others (besides my hairdresser, who pointedly asked me "You're hair's falling out! What's going on??").

Marie:
How did you decide to stick it out? My therapist said that it could stop any minute or continue until I have hair patches on my pillow--he told me to stop but I don't want to just yet--I can't go on anything else due to the pending pregnancy--how did you make that decision--to continue? The hair loss just stopped??
I too have think, wavy, full gorgeous Puerto Rican Hair (sorry I had to brag) so I can spare LOTS of hair, I just don't wanna go bald!! HAAAAA....Latinas can't be bald, it's unheard of! LOL

Femenist,
I don't mean to sound as though it was no big deal, losing my hair. I was scared I'd be bald. And even though my pdoc, whom I'd come to trust by then, assured me I wouldn't go bald, it was devastating to lose my hair. As far as sticking it out, though, I really had no choice. It was either take the meds and risk baldness, or go back to fantisizing about how to kill myself all the time. (Actually, I found the fantisizing comforting, but couldn't stand to psychic pain.) It's sort of like chemo for a cancer patient - the lesser of two evils. As it turned out though, my pdoc was right- the hair loss stopped. I don't know why, but I imagine it had to do with becoming accustomed to the med dosage. Anyway, I've never heard of anyone going completely bald from SSRI's, so I doubt that will happen to you. Just take it in stide and it will eventually grow back. Just think of it as having your hair "thinned", and be glad you have thick hair to begin with! :-)

I had a very similar story with hair loss. Thick hair, so not noticeable to other people, but I would clog the shower drain when washing my hair! But after 3 months, the hair loss just stopped. I was on zoloft.
Good luck.
