Paxil/Celexa question

Posted by Margit on October 11, 2001, at 21:44:01

Which of the two helps better for depression, panic disorder, and anxiety? Also, which causes more sedation/sleepiness?
Thanks for any responses.

Margit..Your first choice probably should be Paxil as it does help with panic and anxiety. Whether it works better for your depression? Who knows? I did real well with Paxil for 3 or so years. Paxil is the most sedating although Celexa, which is currently in my mix, seems to make me sleepy sometimes, too.
Overall, I think they are both great drugs.
Oh yeah, I'm not a doctor; just sharing my experience.

From what i read on prescort and other users and sites, out of all the ssri's zoloft seems to be the most potent seratonin reputake. Paxil seems to be more sedating than the others. Celexa is somewhat mild and sedating.

Out of the SNRI's Effexor is the most potent seratonin reuptake at lower doses, and higher doses norepninephrine, and even higher dopamine.

Serzone, is suppose to be sedative, to most. I tried it and got anxious. It mainly hits seratonin receptors 5ht2a for anxiety, but not very potent.

remeron, is the king of sedating sleep ad's Also helps anxiety and adjitation depression. At higher doses, seems to be bit more activating and wont bother libido.

Selective norepinephrine reuptakes, desipramine and roboxatine work well, mainly on norepinephrine.

Welbutrin acts on dopamine.

Benzo wise, for panic, xanax, for longer acting generalized anxiety , klonopin, valium is moreso very sedative.

Clonazepam 2 mg a day
I don't think my doctor or I believed that this combo would work. But it has. Celexa is the cleanest SSRI as in only affecting Seratonin.
It took 2 years of a lot of combos. During the past 5 years or so, Clonazepam and Ritalin were the only constants.
I was quickly running out of options and the subject of ECT came up a few times. I don't won't to go there, yet.

Thanks Phil for your reply. I had taken Paxil in the past myself for about 5 years with great results. I also took a little bit of Xanax with it as needed. One day I decided I could do without the pills and quit. Well, 3 months later I crashed. I was put on Paxil again, but this time it didn't want to to the trick. After several failed trials of other ADs my doc put me on Celexa 2 weeks ago. It makes me terribly sleepy and I am afraid that it might not work as well for the panic and anxiety. My constant through all the failed trials has been Xanax 6mg to keep me from panicking all the time. I am also taking 2.5mg Zyprexa (for a short while) and have been put on Ritalin along with the Celexa. My pdoc wants me to take 5mg twice a day, but I get to much anxiety and take 1/2 that dose.
Do you suffer from panic and anxiety as well? Doesn't the Ritalin cause you more anxiety?

Margit -

I was on Paxil for several years before it fizzled. Now I'm on Celexa with Provigil (and Depakote). I tried the Ritalin and didn't like the jittery side-effects. Provigil has really helped with the daytime sleepiness. (Also, Sorry for butting in...I'm new to this scene - but I've read alot of the posts and really appreciate all the insight I've gained)

I started breaking up the Celexa, great scored tablet, don't you think, and taking 10 mg over the whole period of time from waking up till going to bed. I was more awake..a few weeks later I could take 30 mg Celexa in the am and 10mg at noon and it was okay. I thought the Klonopin was doing it but I have never had that problem with Klonopin.
Oh, I also had to up my coffee intake 3 fold to stay awake..from 2 cups to about 7 a day.
My doc couldn't believe I was still nodding out while on 400 mg Wellbutrin and 40 mg Ritalin a day.
Things are pretty even now. Celexa probably won't work on panic and anxiety as well as Paxil but, in my case, the Klon. takes good care of that issue.

I wonder if Wellbutrin would give you some energy
and be a sustitute for the Ritalin? It can be quite agitating too. Check with your doc, cause I'm obviously not one, or hopefully some of the gurus will catch your post here.

Margit,
I took Paxil for 6 months. It was great for my anxiety, panic and depression.
I switched over to Celexa because my DR said it was was cleaner - less side effects- hunger, sleepiness etc. Celexa isn't as potent as Paxil and I needed more Celexa to make it work. I had to add Wellbutrin to the mix for the sexual side effects. It made me very anxious and panicky. I tried 150mg SR at first - it was way to anxiety provoking for me. I then switched over to 75mg IR and worked myself up to
3x aday and now am taking 100IR 3x a day + 10 or 15mg of Celexa.
I'm feeling pretty evened out. To be honest I'm waiting for the newer version of Celexa- Forest Labs is saying they will be getting their letter of approval in January. It would be nice to take one pill a day that works for all my symptoms.
Bonnie
