POSITIVE RESPONSE TO EFFEXOR

Posted by angel1 on November 11, 2001, at 6:46:33

HI. I AM RECENTLY MEDICATED ON EFFEXOR XR 150MG. THIS IS MY THIRTEENTH DAY ON 150MG. FIFTH WEEK ON EFFEXOR. MY QUESTION IS, WHEN DO OPTIMAL EFFECTS KICK IN? YESTERDAY I HAD AN EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN AND WAS CRYING AND FELT VERY DEPRESSED. THERE WAS A REASON BEHIND THIS, BUT I FEEL IF THE MED WAS WORKING, I WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ABLE TO HANDLE SUCH A SITUATION.
PLEASE RESPOND ONLY IF YOU HAVE HAD SUCCESS WITH EFFEXOR. THERE IS SO MUCH NEGATIVE TALK ABOUT THIS MED.
I DON'T NEED MORE NEGATIVITY TO AN ALREADY NEGATIVE SITUAION. SO PLEASE, ONLY IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING POSITIVE TO ADD, I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT. THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK IN YOUR QUEST TO FIND OPTIMAL MENTAL HEALTH.

Hi:

In my many years of living with this crappy illness, the moment seems so painful, but it can, and likely will change. It won't always be perfect...but there ARE successful, VERY successful stories. I'd LIKE to think I am moving that way...even if it is the opposite often.

There are many, many people who have gone on to happy lives with Effexor. Your dose may be the question...maybe a bit of a problem. Can you see your doc and ask about going back down to 75, or even 37.5 mgs, and holding until you can tolerate it? Once you can tolerate it, you can either up the dose, or stay at the dose you are comfortable with. There is no "rule" that you MUST be on any particular dose, but docs seem to push this.

For now, if you can, pull away from stress as much as possible...in your state it's not good (Actually...a lot of stress is never really good.:-) Treat yourself like you have a really bad cold or the flu, pamper yourself.

Ask your doc if s/he can prescribe a small dose of a benzo (like Xanax, Ativan, etc..) to help knock down the anxiety when it gets really bad. TRY to keep yourself feeling steady as possible...I know that is harder then hell. Keep coming back for support. Remember...try and get that Effexor dose down to a tolerable level. The psychic pain at your level is NOT and should NOT be acceptable. You nor anybody deserve that.

> hi jay,

thanks for responding to my post. why do you suggest lowering the dose, rather than increasing it? are you on effexor, or have you ever tried it? i feel kind of slow and tired as well and
slightly irritable. anymore thoughts appreciated.

I am on Effexor at 75mg dose capsule, 3 X daily...I happen to really like what this med. has done for me. I have (as have my close friends and family) seen a REAL improvement in my moods on this medication. As I posted in my thread called Effexor-A life Saver, that is exactly how I view this medication.

I only hope that you can give it a bit more of a try...work with your doc. and find the right dose for you.

As for negative things you've heard about Effexor, did you know that 40% of patients that have been treated previously with other antidepresant meds. HAVE HAD SUCCESS with Effexor...I got that from "NAMI" (www.nami.com)...that was a FACT I read on studies done on the drug Effexor!! Not just some B.S. You know?

Well good luck to you and keep trying, something WILL work. Email me if I can help anymore. I like to get emails if I can be of help with my storie(s)....P.L.
