SoreThroat, why ???

Posted by janejj on November 18, 2001, at 16:42:51

Hi,

Ever since I increased my prozac dose to 20mg i have had a really bad sore throat. Has anybody else experienced this and could it be related to the prozac ? Why would prozac cause me to have a sore throat. Anybody have the answers ???

Thanks....

I don't know where you live, but sore throats
are pretty common here starting around November
regardless of whether or not you take prozac. ;)
The drug does wonders, but doesn't solve the
common cold. Now if they could combine prozac
with a medicine that prevents the cold wouldn't
that be a wonder!

Now personally,
I have noticed at times that if I am taking
a lot of pills (vitamins, etc) and I am sticking
my hands in my mouth a lot every day then I
am more susceptible to germs/coughs/colds.
Best to wash those hands before touching
those meds especially this time of year.

I haven't personally heard of
prozac causing sore throats, but any med can have
an adverse reaction of any type for anyone.
Everyone's body is different.

hope it goes away...

It is going around this time of year. I was sick with viral laryngitis last weekend, and it went around work with all getting very sore throat and many loosing their voice. Many clients in the states are reporting seasonal bugs.

Hi:

Yep, over many years of trying different a.d.'s, I noticed a couple of the SSRI's give me a sore throat, and sometimes mess around with my immune system. Prozac and Zoloft, as well as Serzone seemed to absolutely have a cause/effect on me. In fact, I have tried these meds numerous times, and the same thing has happened. These *are* listed as possible side-effects in the PDR. They may subside with longer-term use, and I might suggest notching up your Prozac dose a bit slower.

Don't get me wrong...I am not saying this is a horrible thing, but just may effect some of us with sensitive immune systems. It just may be a matter of slowly increasing and moving doses. Anacin seems to be a great choice for the first month or two while adjusting. If it gets worse, talk to your doc. I have read many others on here and elsewhere who have gotten the same with a few of these meds, so it isn't just you.

Good luck...and stock up on some good pain relievers. :-)

Janey, it's just aspirin. I think any pain reliever would help, and if it is really bad, maybe suggest to doc to lower dose and go more slowly as you increase. If an infection is present, you should go to a walk-in clinic or something and see a doc on what to do. (Might be a good idea anyway.)

Good luck..hope you feel better.
