I miss Paxil!... Neurontin for SP?

Posted by tortoise on January 1, 2002, at 10:33:03

I've been taking SSRI's for depression, anxiety, and SP. The one that worked wonderfully for me was the first one I tried-- Paxil. I also had the most side effects with this one, the most difficult being weight gain (30lbs in 6 months-- and I've *never* gained weight in my adult life!)

I have since tried other SSRI's with varying success and difficulties. I'm currently on Prozac. My pdoc raised me from 20mg to 40mg, but I am now sleeping badly and feeling agitated, with no additional benefit. (I feel tired all the time, but this is probably lack of sleep rather than reaction to Prozac!)

The Pdoc's next move is to add Neurontin to help with sleep and SP. I wish I could go back to Paxil, but couldn't stand the weight gain (and I was also having a few memory issues).

Sorry for the long post; I'm just nervous about starting the Neurontin. I'd like to feel that this is a good next step...

I can relate to you. Paxil worked great for me, but I was always hungry and gained a couple of pounds and I just couldn't stay on it. Im on Prozac now too and it worked better in the beginning. I've had no bad side effects from Prozac but it doesn't work as well for me as Paxil did. I was truly happy. I take Xanax as needed. I have been thinking of asking my pdoc to try Neurontin with the Prozac. I take 50 mg Trazodone with .5 mgs Xanax which gives me great sleep. A lot ofo people claim Neurontin helps them, but you may have to play around with the dosingand take it at least 2x a day. I hope it works well for you. I think Im going to try it.

Did you try adding Wellbutrin to Paxil? I think that Wellbutrin might help with the weight gain side effect.

Thanks-- I did try Wellbutrin, and it seemed to make me agitated. I must say, though, that I didn't stay on it long enough to see how it would effect the weight gain side effect. It didn't help the sexual side effect, which is why I tried adding it (Paxil is also the only SSRI to give me this side effect. Darn Paxil! So good, and yet...)

I will keep Wellbutrin in mind again, though, if I ever go back to Paxil.

Paxil actually didn't change my appetite or eating habits, but radically changed my metabolism! The weight gain came off naturally when I switched drugs (well, I still have 10 of the pounds, but I can live with that). But nothing else has made me feel as good. As I've increase my Prozac, my sleeping is even worse. I feel edgy and wired, but exhausted. :-(

Let me know what your doc says about Neurontin. Good luck!
