triedit update--not on effexor any more

Posted by triedit on January 9, 2002, at 22:40:37

Its been awhile since I dropped in. Looks busy!

Just wanted to post that I switched from Effexor XR (35 mg) to Prozac (20 mg) with no side effects whatsoever.

The weight gain has stopped but I havent yet lost what I gained!

The panic attacks are back, but tolerable. The depression is totally gone.

I feel more like my old self again.

Effexor was wonderful for depression and panic, but when I topped 300 lbs I just had to stop taking it.

It seems to me that a higher Prozac dose should take care of the panic, assuming that Prozac has the same basic pharmacology as Paxil (almost the gold standard now in panic).

A lot of people actually lose weight on Prozac because of its stimulating effect (http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Appetite-and-SSRIs.html). If you don't lose weight on Prozac, you have many options. One is to fight it with a psychopharmacologic agent like Topamax (topiramate) or Wellbutrin (buproprion), which should add mood stability too. Another option is to add a pure weight loss agent such as Xenical (orlistat) or Meridia (sibutramine).

Good luck to you whatever you decide...

How much did you gain on the "side-effexor", and what dose were you at?

Prozac it the only drug to date that caused almost no weight gain for me.

I gained about 10 pounds a week, which is what tipped me off.

I have some other health stuff going on (some abnormal gyn problems that surgery will soon be taking care of) that were causing weight fluctuations of 3-7 pounds a month, but 10 pounds a week was astronomical. Diet didnt seem to affect it.

I have been on Paxil with EXTREEMELY bad side effects. I had taken Prozac many years ago (after my second child actually...i think this is a post partum thing because i have an 11 month old now) and lost a LOT of weight--about 60 pounds in a year. Am hoping for the same this time, but Im 40 now and not the young 20 something I was back then *grin*

Thanks for the help and advice you guys!
