Can anyone give me feedback on their experience with Neurontin for SP or PA? Does it work and what are the side effects? Thanks in advance.

Here's the lowdown on Neurontin that I got from some other newsgroup:
Gabapentin is a very viable option for you, and here's why:
--It has anti-anxiety and antidepressant actions
--It has no anticholinergic side-effects
--Few sexual side-effects
--It now comes in 600 and 800 mg tablets, reducing the number of pills one takes per day
--It has gained the respect of psychiatrists world-wide in less than a decade.
--Gabapentin has few negative drug interactions; it can even be taken with MAOIs and moclobemideHere are the studies that prove Neurontin's efficacy:
1: Jefferson JW.
Benzodiazepines and anticonvulsants for social
phobia (social anxiety disorder).
J Clin Psychiatry. 2001;62 Suppl 1:50-3.
PMID: 112060352: Janowsky DS.
New Treatments of Bipolar Disorder.
Curr Psychiatry Rep. 1999 Dec;1(2):111-113.
PMID: 11122912

When I took Neurontin-I was a totally different person. Given the option, I'd never have stopped. I had not insurance and the cost was outrageous. there were no side effects for me. I would definitely jump at the chance to go back to it. Unfortunately, my insurance covers nothing but generic.
If it's something you and your doc have discussed and you have no hesitations, I'd definitely give it a try. It took a few weeks to get the right dose, but once it was right, I was like a new person..
Just my experience with it..

Neurontin was *great* for my anxiety, helped a little with depression, not much help for hypomania. Pdoc was concerned about the hypomania so he had me go off it to start something else.
I had almost no side effects while I was on the drug (just a little dizziness when I upped my dose--this went away quickly), but I will say that going off the drug (I was at 3200mgs/day) was really tough. I wasn't on anything else (no AD) and I crashed. Unable to sleep and the deepest depression I've ever experienced. I'm not positive that this was from neurontin withdrawl, but I think so, as my moods have stabilized on their own after the neurontin being out of my system a few weeks.

Anna--
I just started Neurontin a week ago for anxiety and SP. I'm also on Prozac, which helps depression, but makes me *extra* edgy. My impression is that I am feeling some improvement already. I haven't noticed any side effects. I'll keep you posted... :-)

MB--
I'm up to 400 mg per day (200 morning, 200 evening). I'm raising it by 100 mg every 3 days, aiming for 900mg a day (lowest therapeutic dose?) Actually, I may have spoken too soon-- I was feeling great yesterday, but today I'm feeling a peculiar pressure in my head. Not really a headache, just pressure. And a bit spacey. I wonder if this is just a temporary thing as I increase...

My pdoc added 100mg of neurontin to my meds (to start). Said to take it in am. I take 15mg of lexapro at bedtime. Anyone tried this combonation? Need extra help with anxiety.
