Didn't get a response last time, so I am posting again.
I am taking 250 mgs depakote for rapid cycling, and since starting it, I can't sleep soundly. I wake every hour or two. This is very disruptive, and I can't tell if the depakote is making me more irritable, or if it's lack of sleep.
It's my impression from the archives, web, etc., that depakote is supposed to decrease anxiety, irritability and improve sleep. As my sleepless nights mount up, I think I am getting more irritable. Can anyone out there tell me their experience with depokote? How was your sleep, anxiety/irritation level? What time do you take your dose, etc?
Any info so appreciated

Sorry Chloe,
I'm afraid I can't be much help. Depakote always helps me to sleep. In fact, I recently upped it and have slept well for the past few nights, although it took a week or so to kick in. And when I first increase it I often get thick headed and groggy in the daytime too.
However, reactions to medicines are very individual. I had a terrible time with my sleep cycle on Neurontin, and I don't think that's usual either.
You'd better give your doctor a call. Decreased sleep does cause a lot of problems with mood, and perhaps he could do something.

Thanks for answering, Dinah. I must have a strange reaction to depakote! Though I must say, fooling around with the timing of the dosing has helped a little...(Thanks Mitch!)
I took it at 6 pm and 11 pm and actually got a few hours solid sleep. So that is something to build on! I had such a better day mood wise with a little added sleep :)Do you continue to take neurontin? I am using them together in hopes I can keep the depakote dose low (so I can keep some hair on my head!). Sometimes I wonder if depakote isn't "enhancing" the AD effect I get from Neurontin and messing up my sleep. Just one of my lastest possible theories!
Thanks again
Chloe
