Has anyone here had success with omega-3 fatty acids for unipolar depression? I've been taking some nearly every day, but I don't know how much to take, and I can't tell whether it's doing anything other than giving me fish breath (Meow).

Bekka and (Chloe, hi!),
I tried the flax oil supplements today for the first time. The galcapsules *smelled* a little *funky*, but I took one with a meal and didn't get any fishy reflux like I did on the Fish oil. This stuff had about 1 gram of Omega-3, with a couple hundred milligrams of Omega-6 combined with Vitamin-E (they mentioned taking 1-4 caps daily)-I will take just one/day for a while thanks.. I can handle this. Obviously, it will take a while to see if can help (or biplolar and ADHD).

you can also get the flax seeds at the coop or healthfood store, grind them up in your blender/coffee grinder and sprinkle on your food (like oat meal) (one or two tablespoons) Keeps fresh longer (in 'natures coating') and you dont have to refredgerate them. Watch out, they also have laxitive effect...
mouse who has yet to get to trying that one

Hi Mitch,
Good, I am glad you tried it. Omega 3 oils and E are heart healthy too. And, I believe they also help with skin conditions, at least in my case...I do think 2 grams is the lowest rec. dose for BP...But I should check on that, cause I am relying on memory right now, yikes!Anyway, I think you plan is a good one. One gelcap with food until you know you are tolerating it well. I think supplementing meds with "alternative" therapies can be very useful.
Keep us informed on your progress.

Well, this stuff just happened to be called "Sundown". I was just scanning through the shelves at the pharmacy and they just had this one-I am sure there are a lot of others.Mitch

have you tried Omegabrite at www.omegabrite.com?
I have used it for months taking 10 a night, and have only once had fish burps (which was horrific!) I can't say it has been miraculous, and I also seem to have a touch of the bipolars. But overall yes it has helped me keep stable and less prone to freaking out.

If anyone's interested, hemp seed oil is very healthy. And it contains no THC so you can even buy it in the supermarket. I add some of it to salad dressings & baking. I use it mixed with aloe vera gel for my skin too. A little goes a long way.
Here's an article on its benefits:

I don't agree with Andrew Weil, M.D. all the time, but this info is good.

> AnnieHoly Moly 5G! I have had a *little* GI distress from taking 1G gelcapsules (1 daily with food). If that doesn't help I probably will just stop taking it. Not to mention the expense. It was about eight bucks for 60 gelcaps. I went in to the pharmacy yesterday to check on SAM-e and $22 for a bottle-yikes-don't know who is profiteering worse-the pharm. industry or the supplement industry :)

Flax-seed oil has a fairly short chain fatty acid rather than the long ones found in fish oil.Fish oil is probably better if you have bipolar as a short chain may induce mania.See www.omega3.20megsfree.com

Some fish oil tastes bad because it is not pure or fresh enough.I have found the Eskimo-3 version the least fishy in taste but it is expensive.
