Topomax

Posted by Scheherizade on February 5, 2002, at 12:38:26

I've read some of the comments re Topomax causing a 'funny' taste. Does it go away? I've been on it for 3 weeks now and have not had a Pepsi since I started it. Which is good, as I was a soda-a-day drinker. Hoping it will stop my smoking too!! It's really made me cut down. But the affect it has had on my taste buds! EVERYTHING tastes odd. I'm just having such a difficult time finding anything tasty. Any relief in sight?

Thats really weird. I take 400 mg of Topamax
a day and it doesn't affect my taste one bit.
It does seem to kill my appetite in a stealth
manner as advertised.

Curious, in what manner do things taste odd?

Before I noticed it taking over food taste, it first felt like I kept sticking my tongue on a 9v battery. And then after reading some of the other posts on Topo I see others describe a metallic taste. That's the constant state in my mouth at this point. Now if I take just a sip of Pepsi (Pepsiholic since childhood!) I feel like I'm drinking bad carbonated water from a fountain drink. Chocolate (my motto has always been 'promise me anything but give me chocolate!) is so incredibly sweet it's close to revolting. Most of my favored foods are no longer favored due to being tainted with the metallic taste. Depending on the food it can either taste too sweet now, or taste very bitter. I have noticed my appetite being suppressed which is a bonus to me, but food becomes even more of a struggle because of the taste factor. My water intake has certainly increased. I drank at least 64oz daily already, but since I started this I can't get enough. I keep trying to wash away the taste. I'm really hoping once I get to the desired dosage (unknown at this point) it will level off. Hence, for those who have encountered this, did it finally go away or did you get used to it so that you don't notice it any more? And one last thing. Does anyone take this for chronic headache or menstrual migraine headache? Did I answer your question sufficiently John? Or do you need a bit more detail than too sweet/bitter? Just let me know.

Thanks. You answered my question.
I'm taking topamax for chronic facial neuralgia
(tension headaches, teeth grinding) and as a mood
stabilizer. I am bipolar. It had been a good replacement
medicine for Klonopin. I have not experienced any
side effects to complain about.

Regards,
John

I'm glad you're not affected taste wise. Good deal! How long have you been on it now? Has it helped your headaches? That's why I've been put on it. I have tension, stress, migraine and pms headaches. I'm also experiencing the tingling I've read about, in some of my extremities, mostly fingers but even lips. It seems to occur most often in the morning. And I'm only at 50mg. 1 week at 25mg and haven't even hit 3 weeks at 50mg. I guess I'm freaking from the side affects and wondering should I barrel through. After having scanned the posts it could be 3 months before it's benefits begin. And even longer if my GP decides to up it since I'll then have to contend with adjustments again. Meanwhile the headaches could fell an elephant.

Well, thanks for commenting. I appreciate it.

The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
The LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.

Blessings to you,
Hang in there and go slowly. If you do not give up the side effects will subside and should go away in a couple of months. Maria Warren

Wow! I miss anything that was carbonated, especially drinking diet soda! Everything tastes flat and has an aftertaste. It’s not worth drinking, even though I use to get my caffeine rush with a diet soda (or 2) in the morning. I've been on Topomax for 2 months and this hasn't gone away. This is the only (outdated) post that I have ever seen on this side effect. I also get the tingling feet and the upset stomach. I can handle those.
