help - need deep sleep

Posted by Michael D on March 17, 2002, at 7:16:59

I NEED deep sleep. I haven't had it in years.

I'm on Celexa, might try changing to Remeron.
I've heard of Topomax, Tradozone, (I'm allergic to Serzone), and Zyprexa. Most of this came from the archives.

Is there one called Gabitrol, or something like that? I thought I read a post by a doctor who said he perscribes it to PTSD patients for sleep, but I can't find it anymore.

Any help would be helpful. -> I see my pdoc on Friday.

Cheers,

Michael Dewolf

"Previous studies with healthy volunteers and patients with depression have consistently shown that single and repeated doses of mirtazapine 15 or 30 mg reduce sleep latency and prolong its duration. Different pharmacologic mechanisms are probably responsible for the two effects. Mirtazapine strongly blocks histaminergic transmission, and selective H1 antagonists readily induce sleep. However, they do not prolong total sleep time. Mirtazapine also blocks 5-HT2A/C receptors. Unlike antihistamines, Mirtazapine's effects on sleep are extremely resistant to tolerance. This dual mechanism of hypnotic activity adequately accounts for mirtazapine's effects on sleep in this study. With the patients' Alertness ratings showing the development of tolerance to the antihistamine effect, we believe that the persistence of mirtazapine's sleep-enhancing activity was primarily due to the 5-HT2A/C blockade."

Try trazadone anyway...although serzone and trazadone are chemically related, this doesn't mean you are allergic to both of them.

...I'm actually allergic to the extended release form of Wellbutrin, but not the standard Wellbutrin (Im assuming it's something they use as a binding agent, or the dye)

Trazadone also blocks histamine receptors (like benedryl)...

I would stay away from Zyprexa. Taking an antipsychotics as a sleep aid has always irritated me...that's like taking morphine for an ant bite.

I'm not aware of any specific studies on Topamax and sleep...topamax does increase GABA levels. I take 200mg of topamax (for epilepsy), it doesn't make me drowsy (but I also take other meds)

Have you ever been to a sleep clinic?

so actually what med is good for deep sleep or rem sleep. i understand ghb puts one into deep rem sleep, but you cannot stay asleep for more than 4 hrs. Often waking up in a days or confused due to the dopamine rebound and when jolted from rem sleep, you seem to have to adjust to reality.
Plus , these dreams are very very vivid, moreso nightmares. Does remeron put you into rem, or non rem> what med is actually best for sleep recovery.

hi michael, don,t know if you have tried trimipramine(surmontil). i was on it for 3yrs in the late 80s and it provided me with a very deep sleep. i would advise starting at a small dose- 25mg and work your way up gradually. my therapeutic dose was 225mg and maintenance dose dropped to 150mg.totaly eliminated my need for sleeping pills. hope this helps.

trazadone worked wonders for me. i didn't even wake up in the middle of the night to pee. this is an extremely safe drug that has been around for awhile (cheap) and i think it works wonders. it is an antidepressant which has a side effect of working wonders on the "architecture" of sleep. give it a whirl. it doesn't have any side effects that i can think of except that you feel groggy for the first couple of days. start on a weekend or at a time that you can be groggy for a few days. good luck.
