I take topamax primarily for tension headaches. I used it to replace Klonopin. It also help to smooth out mood swings for bipolar disorder II (manic-depression).

Bipolar II is not manic-depression- we dont get the highs. But topamax is used for Bipolar II patients. I took it and had a bad time with it. It definitely helps with weight loss though if you're interested.

Maybe we can call it hypomanic-depression?
But technically some of us BP II's do get the "highs". I know that I do. This may not be common case; usually I am just irritated/agitated.

Kristin--HOW did Topamax help w/ weight loss? Is it an activating medication or is it more that it just flattens your appetite?
Thanks

FYI, it kills my appetite. I don't feel it affects my metabolism. It doesn't cause nausea. I have to remind myself to eat at times . I still eat the same amount of food and get the "you are full signal". I just don't get the "you are hungry" signal.

It killed my appetite also. I felt nausiated because I did not have food on my stomach when i took my meds, it was a horrible cycle that left me feeling awful.

yep, this happened to me too. It took me a while to catch onto what was happening. Forcing myself to eat at regular intervals solved the problem.
Best Wishes.
