WELLBUTRIN - Allergic reaction?

Posted by Canace on April 1, 2002, at 7:24:10

Has anyone else ever had an allergic reaction to Wellbutrin or possibly a combination of WB and some other drug?
The only other medication that I have just begun to take is Pravachol. I've been taking Wellbutrin for 3 weeks now and suddenly
2 days ago I broke out in hives and it hasn't stopped.

Thank you

I have read of this happening, but you should consult a doctor asap. You may be able to get by with an added antihistamine, but it's best to get full medical attention.

Hope that helps...

I've heard of people being allergic to the SR (sustained release) version of Wellbutrin. Something about the fillers/coloring used in the pill. Sometimes a switch to the IR (immediate release) version of the medicine solves the problem.

A BIG STINKER of a rash. . more like giant red patches of itchy. After ONE pill.

Small red patches of itchyt en years ago--after taking it for three years---thought maybe my body had forgotten.
Ha.

Derm. called it a "Fixed Drug Reaction."

Thank you all very much for your input. I did call the doctor on Monday and he felt that it couldn't be the Wellbutrin since I'd been taking that for 3 weeks. He said to stop the Pravachol since I'd only been taking that for one week.
To Zo.. It's like you say, more like patches, rather than hive type bumps, and it travels. First it might be my whole trunk area, then it will be my hands only, then my back. I started taking Benadryl Monday night and it seems I can't stop taking it or the itching escalates again.
I would think that whatever was causing this would have been out of my system by now. I'm thinking I should call the doctor again.. that even though I've been taking the Wellbutrin for 3 weeks it just might be what's causing this. If Wellbutrin take weeks to be effective, maybe it can take weeks for an allergic reaction as well.

Again, thank you :)

But I'd been taking it for several years before I became allergic.

I remember my doctor then took me downstairs to see the dermatologist--and she had to get out her books, and after some searching through ug-lee pictures, they finally found it: "Fixed Drug Reaction". Remember that term.

So I shouldn't be surprised if he hasn't seen it.

Good luck,
Zp

Ok so i had been on wellbutrin sr for 3 weeks. Rockin and rolling along. I thought I had found paradise. energy, getting things accomplished, a real genuine love for the future. Then this thanksgiving holiday I wake up with red huge hives and cannot stop itching. My hands swell to the size of baseball gloves. and my eyes swell to the size of baseballs. I was rushed to the emergency room and given IV of benedryl and steroid. Dr. said that in the 3rd week, you find out if you are allergic to the medicine. Her advice to me......Stop taking it. Find another. I have had the good stuff taken away from me. waaaaaaaaaaa, i guess its better than living with a back scratcher and glove hands. i am trying to talk to my doctor about another alternative.

That makes sense to me about the 3rd week, because that's when you usually start to see the benefits from the drug. In my case and yours, we got to see that our bodies were allergic to it.:<

I've been on it for 3.5 weeks and about 4 days ago I broke out in 'poison-ivy-like' itchy bumps. Not a whole lot, but enough to make me wonder. Thanks for the information. I see my doc tomorrow, but I don't think my reaction is severe enough to quit the med.

Anyone that doesn't think the internet is great hasn't submitted a query like Wellbutrin and allergic reaction - which brought me to this site and exactly what I was looking for! I have had a history of skin irritations and periodically, hives (usually from stress) so when I started to break out on a regular basis I thought it was just more of what I had previously experienced. I am on a 2xday at 200per and I am about 4 weeks in. The hives can vary in intensity and can be on my legs or arms or both. They usually pass within about 30 or so minutes. I will also say that I had a very bad reaction to Prozak and would look for any alternative that had similar results of Wellbutrin - any suggestions?

I am so glad to have found this site. I had been on Wellbutrin for about 22 days(ramp up for 7 days then XL for about 15) when I broke out head-to-toe in hives. I've never in my life had hives. I went to the doctor but he (nor I) associated it with the Wellbutrin. After I did some research, however, I found story after story of people experiencing "delayed sensitivity" to the drug, in which the reaction only shows up 14-20 days into treatment. I took myself off the Wellbutrin, and got on a steroid pack and antihistime three days ago. I'm seeing some progress, but it's not fully cleared up. Thanks again for all the posts!
