Dr. Kramer - question about Lexapro

Posted by Bill L on April 4, 2002, at 9:32:16

I understand that the makers of Celexa plan to market Lexapro (escitalopram) perhaps in June of this year (2002). They claim that in clinical tests it had less sexual and tiredness side effects than Celexa. Other than that, it worked atleast as well as Celexa and did not have any increased side effects.

Would you therefore expect that most or all people currently taking Celexa should switch to Lexapro?

NO....I market Celexa. I know when Lexapro is out, your rep will not ask you to switch. #1 it's not ethical, if your patients are under control...stay there, #2 If you feel the side effects, or the drug-to drug interactions could be less...then switch. Forest is a strong/smart and ethical company...I just went to a national meeting where it was explicitly stated...not to encourage switching. #3 There is no monetary incentive for reps to suggest switching off Celexa to Lexapro either. (in fact, it will hurt)
